Carpentry Apprenticeship
Position: Part Time/Full Time
Location: Roanoke
Position Summary
Student Registered Apprenticeship positions integrate school-based and on-the-job learning with relevant technical education in the classroom. Participants gain employability and occupational skills. Local programs provide training based on statewide apprenticeship curriculum guidelines, endorsed by business and industry. Student Apprentices are instructed by qualified teachers and skilled journey worker worksite experts.
Through on the job training, student apprentices will assist via their selected path (Electrical, Sheet Metal, Plumbing) in performing any combination of the following tasks: assemble, install, gathers tools and supplies to be used at work site according to instructions; measures, using ruler and hand and power tools; assists in lifting, performs minor repairs; maintains tools and equipment and keeps supplies and parts in order.
Student Apprentices remain enrolled in academic classes to meet requirements in occupation specific related instruction classes.

Essential Functions:
Attending to the work assignment instructions or orders of supervisor.
Using tools or work aids to work, move, guide or place objects or materials. Some latitude for judgment with regard to precision attained and selecting appropriate tool, object or material, although this is readily manifest.
Inserting, throwing, dumping or placing materials in or removing them from machines or equipment which are automatic or tended or operated by other workers.
Requirements:
Reasoning Skills: Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.
Mathematical Skills: Elementary and some additional courses.
Language Skills: Elementary and some additional courses.
Specific Vocational Preparation: Over 30 days, up to three months.
Must be a senior in high school, or at least 17 years of age.
Travel
Travel to and from job sites is required.
Work Environment
This position works in an office environment.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use their hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. They will need to stand (approximately 60%), walk (approximately 30%), and sit (approximately 10%). The employee will also need to be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, handle, feel, talk, and hear. The employee will need to be able to carry up to 75lbs, lift up to 100lbs, and move up to 200lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, midrange vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position which typically requires 40 hours per week.
