Job Description Summary

The Tribal Court Bailiff is responsible for maintaining order in the courtroom during a trial or hearing, provides security for all parties, including judges, plaintiffs, defendants, and juries, imposes all courtroom policies, keeps disturbances to a minimum, assist in providing security, executes the judge's orders, and serves legal documents to individuals involved in a court case, including summonses, complaints, subpoenas, and other legal notifications to appear in court. A tribal court bailiff must be highly organizational and observational to trace unusual activities, and adhering to courthouse internal regulations and policies.

Education and/or Experience

  • A High School Diploma or GED
  • Three (3) years of recent experience or previous employment in law enforcement, corrections, criminal justice, or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • College Courses in Criminal Justice or related field are preferred, but not required.
  • Experience in court procedures, courtroom decorum, and legal terminology.
  • Experience in radio transmissions and speak clearly over the two-way radio using proper radio system signals and codes.
  • Knowledge of the signs and symptoms of mental/physical impairment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people in a courteous, tactful, and fair manner under all conditions except when a firmer manner is required.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and maintain the confidentiality of court cases and materials.
  • Ability to read, speak, write and spell using standard American English grammar.
  • Experience in completing accurate and comprehensive reports promptly
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Required to obtain and maintain CPR, AED, and First Aid Certificate
  • Ability to plan and organize work.
  • Must have a Valid CA driver’s license and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • An understanding of current Native American culture and experience working with Native American communities is preferred.

Essential Duties and Information

  • Conducts a search of the courtroom prior to and after court proceedings for weapons and contraband.
  • Assures all parties involved in the proceedings are present.
  • Announces the entrance and exit of the judge and instructs those present in the courtroom to rise and be seated at appropriate times.
  • Administers oath to witnesses prior to taking the stand.
  • Maintains order in the courtroom at all times during the sessions of the court.
  • Protects and supervises the entry and exit arears in the courtroom.
  • Escorts jurors to and from the courtroom, and maintains the jury deliberation room in an orderly manner.
  • Handles evidence and court documents.
  • Analyzes situations and adopt effective and reasonable courses of action, anticipate and prevent or control emergency situations and maintain a professional demeanor during stressful situations.
  • Serves notices, subpoenas, summons, or other court documents, which includes delivering out into the community when not needed in the courtroom.
  • Perform security check of the courtroom at the close of business to ensure that appropriate doors are locked for the day.
  • Maintain a standard of punctuality and dependability of attendance and retain myself cleanliness, tidiness, neatness and appropriately attire.
  • Uses and operates a variety of tools and specialized office equipment including a personal computer, printer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, two-way radio, cell phone and related software or programs.
  • Follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively both orally and in writing including preparing standard reports.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external personnel and the general public.
  • Assists in first aid and CPR issues as needed and emergency evacuation as directed in the Disaster/Emergency Response Procedure’s manual.
  • Attend all necessary training to maintain current certification and any other court training that are mandated by the judge or court administrator.
  • Represents the Tribe with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
  • Shall abide by the Code of Ethics for Judicial Employees.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to stand, move and work throughout the office area and properties, including walking up to 1 ½ mile, climbing stairs and standing for extensive periods of time, may include exposure to adverse weather conditions, stressful personal circumstances and other hazardous conditions.

Typically, the individual will be housed in an office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but will escalate when located in the casino environment. Must be able to grasp, bend, lift and/or carry or otherwise move goods weighing a minimum of 25 lbs. on an intermittent basis, and sufficient dexterity of hand in order to use office equipment including, but not limited to: a computer keyboard, calculator, general office equipment and multi-line telephone.
