Controller (Automotive Industry Preferred)

This company is a leader in its field with a great reputation for 100 years. With 2 company locations in the St. Louis area, they seek an accounting professional with a progressive leadership background to manage 7 professionals in the accounting department. After a long tenure, the current Controller is retiring, but willing to stay and train the incumbent.

Now is your chance to lead and direct the organization's accounting and finance functions, establish and maintain the organization's accounting ssystems, procedures and policies. This role serves as business partner to the leadership team and consults with the managers within the organization, advising them of current budgetary information and working with managers to create a fiscal strategy.

Responsibilities include:

  • This position is responsible for the accounting/finance operations of the company, to include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company’s reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles and standards.
  • Advise leadership group and department managers on how to ensure maximum gross profit is retained
  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures

· Participate in the development of, and support, the company’s strategic plans

  • Develop and execute the company’s financial strategy in collaboration with CEO, owners, senior management, and outside advisory board members
  • Provide hands-on direction and management of the accounting/finance team including cash flow management, accounting and finance, expense and expenditure, and payroll functions
  • Coordinate closely with Human Resources in selected overlap areas such as annual 401(k) plan audit, accounting for employee taxes and benefits, budgeting and forecasting for payroll and benefits, etc.
  • Maintain strong and favorable relationships with strategic business partners including banks, CPA firms, outside legal counsel, advisory board members, payroll / benefits providers
  • Oversight of the accounting office personnel along with all aspects of the general ledger and financial statements
  • Responsible for adherence to policies and internal control structure
  • Proactively manage and safeguard company assets
  • Actively manage expense structure and vendors
  • Work with the leadership/management teams to review the data and prepare reports/analysis as necessary

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration
  • Masters/MBA/CPA is a plus
  • Experience in the automotive industry or an adjacent industry is preferred
  • 8 years progressive experience in accounting / finance positions to a similar role
  • Must enjoy roles that combine being hands-on, while effectively leading a team and providing strategic insights
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting and cost control principles including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Knowledge of financial and accounting reporting systems
  • Enjoys, and successful with, small to mid-market privately-held companies
  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills, and ability to engage with staff at all levels of the organization
  • Proven ability to manage large-scale projects consistent with the long-term goals and objectives of the company
  • Self-motivated, goal-oriented and enthusiastic presence in a team environment with the ability to train, lead, and influence others
  • Effective analytic and problem-solving skills
  • Experience building/developing effective teams
