Position Description

JOB TITLE : Paralegal

DEPARTMENT: Corporate Office/Legal Department

LOCATION : Simpsonville, South Carolina

REPORTS TO : General Counsel

FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Salaried, exempt

POSITION PURPOSE

The Paralegal is responsible for assisting the General Counsel as it pertains to franchise administration and enforcement, the management and administration of the Franchise Disclosure Document and its state registrations, contracts, intellectual property portfolio, litigation matters, and various projects managed by the Legal Department.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reviews Franchise documentation and enforcement
  • Files annual Franchise Disclosure Document and its state registrations
  • Maintains database of health club membership agreement templates
  • Maintains the Brands Contracts Database
  • Maintains the Brands Vendors Database
  • Assists in management of litigation matters
  • Assists in management of company’s intellectual property portfolio
  • Proofreads, edits, and issues official communications, Franchise Disclosure Document, contracts, and other legal documents
  • Responsible for legal research and drafting
  • Participates in the development and implementation of corporate policies, procedures, and programs
  • Provides administrative support for the General Counsel
  • Successfully completes special projects and other assignments
  • Commitment to exercise at least 3x week preferred
  • Performs additional duties as assigned, as this list does not reflect all the duties and responsibilities of the Paralegal Position.

QUALIFICATIONS

Competencies:

  • Excellent written/verbal communication and drafting skills in interfacing with business personnel and franchisees.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively in a polite and courteous manner
  • Prioritizes and completes a variety of tasks in a timely manner
  • Demonstrates willingness to undertake duties as assigned
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion, be adaptable to various competing demands and demonstrate the highest level of client service response.
  • Possess a strong commitment to a team environment while working well with others which includes treating employees, clients, and anyone else necessary with respect and dignity.

Skills:

  • Firsthand knowledge of statutes, rules, and regulations pertaining to businesses and franchising.
  • Excellent contract law experience and familiarity with franchise processes and intellectual property law. 
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, and contract management and e-signing software.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Paralegal certification preferred

Experience:

  • 2 years of general legal work in franchise and/or commercial law preferred

Work Environment:

  • Works primarily in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to be punctual and attend work on a regular and consistent basis
  • Overtime may be required to meet project deadlines
  • Ability to concentrate with various interruptions, weather conditions, and noise levels
  • Must be able to talk, hear, use hands, fingers, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl
  • Must be able to stand and walk 30% of the time
  • Occasionally will be expected to lift boxes not to exceed 30 pounds
