This notice is to assist managers in identifying candidates interested in the Chemist position (1 vacancy) located at Norfolk Naval Shipyard Quality Assurance Office 1344.

-This is a permanent full time position at full performance level.

-Must be a US Citizen

-Must be determined suitable for federal employment

-You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level clearance may result in the withdrawl of a job offer or removal.

-Work may require travel away from the normal duty station

-Work primarily involves prolong standing. However, walking, climbing and light lifting are also required. Some of the work is sedentary, incumbent should be able to perform ordinary laboratory work.

RESPONSIBILITIES (include but not limited to):

1. Incumbent will examine, analyze and evaluate petroleum products using various analytical techniques to determine conformance to specifications, etc.

2. Incumbent will conduct routine maintenance checks of laboratory instruments and equipment and perform repairs and troubleshooting as necessary.

3. Incumbent will utilize SLIMS for loggings and tracking samples, Q.C. validations, measuring trends and processing laboratory.

4. Incumbent will prepare standard operating procedures to be released for use in laboratory testing programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

-Experience using Gas Chromatography (GC), Ion Chromatography (IC), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), and other equipment.

-Experince evaluating proposed chemical processes or procedures, advising toward resolution of problems or difficulties encounter and explaining the chemistry involved, designating materials to use and the time a particular chemical process can be safely performed, and actually accomplishing a job using shop and/or ship personnel.

-Experience proving advice, guidance, and training to junior chemists and technicians in the performance of the analytical methods and procedures used. Assisting junior chemists and technicians in resolving performance problems that they encounter and reviews the results of their analyses and advises them to reanalyze their samples when necessary.

-Experience maintaining working knowledge of current methods, standards, and practices in quality control including local policies and procedures. Modifing existing procedures and developing new quality control specifications and procedures to meet changing requirements. Representative items under the control of the chemsit are laboratory equipment, analytical instruments, raw materials, reagents, and analytical procedures.

EDUCATION

Degree: Physical Sciences, life sciences or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus and at least 6 semester hours in physics

Combinations of education and experience

3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
