Description:

Join the Girard community and make a positive impact for the students at Philadelphia’s only full-scholarship boarding school. The STEM Director will work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, alumni and community partners to draft the vision of STEM learning at Girard, facilitate the design of the EMS and HS STEM labs and oversee the integration of STEM principles and practices across all grade levels (1-12). This individual will lead STEM-related initiatives, programs, and activities, and provide leadership and support to teachers in implementing STEM instructional strategies and promoting STEM literacy and proficiency among our students. This position begins on July 1, 2024, is a regular full time position and reports to the Vice President of Student Experience.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Curriculum Development and Integration:

  • Design and oversee the implementation of a standards-based STEM curriculum aligned with state and national standards and tailored to the needs and interests of our diverse student population.
  • Collaborate with teachers to integrate STEM concepts and skills into existing curriculum units and develop interdisciplinary projects and activities that foster creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
  • Provide professional development and support to teachers in implementing STEM instructional strategies, utilizing technology, and incorporating hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences.

Program Management and Administration:

  • Develop and manage 2 STEM labs and partner with the Vice President of Student Experience to develop the annual budget for the STEM program, including allocation of resources for materials, equipment, and professional development.
  • Establish partnerships with industry, higher education institutions, alumni, and community organizations to enhance STEM education opportunities for students and provide real-world learning experiences.
  • Coordinate STEM-related extracurricular activities, competitions, and events, such as robotics clubs, science fairs, and STEM symposiums, to engage students and showcase their achievements.

Assessment and Data Analysis:

  • Select and implement assessment tools and measures to evaluate student learning outcomes and program effectiveness in STEM disciplines.
  • Analyze student performance data and identify areas for improvement, intervention, and enrichment to ensure equitable access and achievement for all students.
  • Use data-driven decision-making to inform instructional practices, resource allocation, and program development.

Professional Learning and Collaboration:

  • Facilitate collaboration and professional learning communities (PLCs) among teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders to share best practices, explore new ideas, and develop innovative approaches to STEM education.
  • Lead and participate in professional development opportunities, workshops, and conferences to stay current on research-based practices and emerging trends in STEM education.
  • Mentor and coach teachers in STEM content knowledge, pedagogy, and instructional technology integration.

Community Engagement and Outreach:

  • Foster partnerships with parents, families, and community members to promote STEM awareness and involvement in school and community events, initiatives, and programs.
  • Serve as an ambassador and advocate for STEM education within the school, the city, and broader community, promoting the importance of STEM literacy and workforce readiness.
Qualifications/Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, STEM-related field, or equivalent required (Master’s preferred).
  • Valid teaching license/certification required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience in STEM disciplines.
  • Minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience in grades 1-8.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in developing and implementing STEM programs or initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of curriculum development, instructional technology, and project-based learning.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to analyze data, set goals, and measure outcomes to improve student achievement and program effectiveness.
