Behavioral Health Consultant
Job Summary: The Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC) provides comprehensive and culturally competent behavioral health care consisting of assessment, evaluation, brief intervention, short-term therapy, resources and other therapeutic support to clients and patients of Mazzoni Center. The BHC works closely with medical staff to facilitate holistic patient care.
Communication: Good oral and written communication skills are required for this position. The person in this position must be able to communicate effectively with the clients, staff, and others, and contribute to a positive environment.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Performs consultations and follow-up in conjunction with primary care visits, including behavioral, diagnostic and functional assessments, introduction to services, provide referrals, psychoeducation and information, and implement brief therapy and other clinical interventions within the scope of patients' regular medical visits.
  • Provide recovery support including MOUD/MAT as a part of interdisciplinary team at Mazzoni Center; maintain understanding of and familiarity with MOUD/MAT resources and referrals.
  • Consult with patients and coordinate referrals with providers and staff; identify, refer, and advocate for patients needing specialized behavioral health, recovery services, psychiatric, gender affirming supportive resources, and related services; make recommendations to providers regarding individual patient care; use ASAM criteria to determine appropriate levels of care.
  • Complete supportive mental health letters when appropriate, including but not limited to: letters for gender marker changes, surgery letters, mental health referrals, and employment/benefit letters.
  • Provide social work and advocacy services to TGNCNB patients/youth/families.
  • Provide additional psychosocial support to clients and patients including TGNCNB/gender expansive youth and caregivers as needed.
  • Complete gender affirming services informational interviews and follow-up counseling services with patients starting hormone treatment as needed; collaborate with medical providers to develop treatment plans; coordinate and monitor ongoing engagement and care.
  • Provide crisis intervention to patients with acute behavioral health needs; triage and respond to ensure patient safety in accordance with Mazzoni Center crisis response procedures; train and disseminate information regarding behavioral health crisis services to staff.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in EMR in compliance with funder and agency requirements; communicate updates and critical information to other staff in a timely manner to enhance the effectiveness of patient care.
  • Participate in regular individual and group supervision; attend departmental and agency meetings.
  • Assist in providing staff training and education regarding the integrated behavioral health-primary care model and best practices for integrated behavioral health services in primary care.
  • Expand professional knowledge of therapeutic skills and techniques through supervision, training and consultation; complete a minimum of 25 training hours annually in topics related to clinical growth and development as detailed on Professional Development Plan.
  • Complete annual Professional Development Plan outlining training goals and objectives.
  • Participate in behavioral health-related quality improvement activities.
  • Work within the terms and limits of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Protect patient and agency information at all times; adhere to agency Confidentiality Policy, HIPAA as well as other laws governing privacy/disclosure; especially with regard to technology and tele-communication, including telehealth.
  • Serves as liaison to behavioral health community at-large.
  • Works flexible hours, including some evenings.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Education, Training, License and Certification, Skills and Experience:
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution with a focus/major in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling or related field.
  • Active LCSW, PsyD or PhD in Pennsylvania. Will consider license-eligible within 3 months of hire. Additional New Jersey license preferred, but not required.
  • Post-graduate clinical experience, preferably with short-term interventions in health care setting
  • Demonstrated understanding of impact of trauma on mental and physical wellbeing and the application of trauma-informed care
  • Demonstrated competency in providing behavioral interventions to individuals, families, couples, and groups with behavioral health and/or substance use issues
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with staff, patients, case managers and other behavioral health clinicians in a primary care setting
  • Demonstrated cultural competency in clinical work with racially and socio-economically diverse, LGBTQ and HIV positive populations
  • Clinical competencies include but are not limited to: psychoeducation, cognitive-behavioral interventions, motivational interviewing, medication adherence counseling and disease self-management counseling, ASAM substance use evaluation, level of care assessment, specialized referrals, identification of maladaptive coping strategies, and development of harm reduction strategies
  • Knowledge of and experience with managed care/funding sources preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; attention to detail. Strong organizational skills; and computer literacy.
  • Ability to work effectively and independently with flexibility in adapting to the changing needs of the position, and effectively taking initiative to meet deadlines.
  • Completion of mandatory trainings upon hire: CPR, First Aid, Narcan, HIV, Confidentiality, TB/STI, ASAM, Family Systems, Smoking Cessation, Suicide Assessment (CSSRS), Ethics, Mandated Reporting.

  1. Background checks are required, including Criminal Background Clearance, Child Abuse Clearance, and FBI Clearance.
