Reports To : Building Principal

POSITION OVERVIEW

Sussex County Public Schools is seeking an individual who will serve as a classroom teacher for elementary children and provide a safe, caring, and engaging learning environment in which students can learn, grow, and reach their full potential.

The desired candidate will facilitate student success in academic and interpersonal skills by implementing the state approved curriculum, documenting teaching and student progress and outcomes, while addressing specific educational needs of students, providing a safe and conducive learning culture.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES :

  • Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of supporting teacher's expectations, developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
  • Assesses student progress, expectations, goals, etc. for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials to provide individualized and small-group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of each student;
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and approaches to the maturity and interests of the students;
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information for the purpose of protection of students, staff, parents and district.
  • Monitors student activities (e.g. classroom, lunch, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of providing for the safety and welfare of students. Prepares teaching materials and related reports (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and documenting student progress.
  • Provides proper care, management, and reasonable security for all district property in their custody (e.g. equipment, supplies, classroom, facilities, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining inventories, preventing damage and/or theft.
  • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher instructional assistants, volunteers, and substitute teachers;
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom;
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in congruency with those goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects to communicate said objectives to students;
  • Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards and interest centers;
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques, technology and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved;
  • Evaluates students’ academic and social growth; keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports;
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required;
  • Diagnoses the instructional needs of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of division specialists as required;
  • Administers class standardized tests in accordance with division testing programs;

Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities;

  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, division policy, and administrative procedures;
  • Attends staff meetings, PTO meetings, and serves on staff committees, as required; assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner;
  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional growth by seeking continuing education and in-service training programs
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Terms of

Employment : 8 hours per day, 10 months (200 days)

Evaluation : Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Sussex County School Board’s policy manual.
