The entrly level Flagger/Utility Locator & Data Collector position is a full time role primarily focusing on flagging duties to support our installation team. When flagging is not required, you may be assigned to inspect and collect data on utility poles or perform underground utility locating for the engineering team. Hunter will certify you as an “Oregon Traffic Control Flagger” and train you in pole data collection and underground utility locating.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • As a flagger, you will be expected to apply standard work zone traffic control principles.
  • As a flagger, you will manage your time effectively, reaching multiple job sites per day on time to assist the technician with flagging needs.
  • As a flagger, you may be required to work 10 hours or more in a single day.
  • As a locator, you will locate Hunter-owned underground facilities using radio detection transmitters and receivers, probes, maps, and other tools and resources; you will also mark Hunter-owned underground facilities using marking paint, flags, and other tools.
  • As a locator, you will communicate verbally and in writing with other utility operators, excavators, and the public; take other actions as needed to protect facilities from damage.
  • As a locator, you will document utility location activities; take photographs of marks and document details such as approximate footages of locates performed along with other tasks.
  • As a Utility pole data collector, you will perform utility pole and telecommunications facilities inspections using a variety of tools and techniques such as visual observation, measuring sticks and tapes, digital cameras, and electronic surveying equipment.
  • As a Utility pole data collector, you will accurately enter gathered data into predefined forms using digital devices and/or handwritten notes, reporting observations in a clear and concise manner.

Requirements

  • Telecommunications/Utility locator experience preferred but not required.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Basic computer skills. 
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must have and maintain a clean driving record.
  • Able to safely operate a company-owned and/or personal motor vehicle in accordance with Hunter Communications policy, local, state, and federal laws. Adherence to Hunter Communications safety policies and procedures and industry best practices.

Working conditions

  • Works inside buildings as well as outside in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Constantly walking on outdoor terrain of all kinds, including rocky, uneven, and uncleared ground, in all weather conditions.
  • Frequently exposed to moderate to occasionally loud noise levels from traffic, equipment, and other sources.
  • Constantly working within proximity to pedestrian and vehicle traffic, construction activities, and in other scenarios requiring the use of hearing and seeing to identify potential hazards.
  • Occasionally working in proximity to hazardous plant life, including blackberry vines and poison oak.
  • Occasionally working in proximity to hazardous animal life, including pets, snakes, and biting/stinging insects.
  • Occasionally working outdoors during low-light times of day.

Physical Requirements

  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 lbs.
  • Ability to operate both electric and standard hand tools.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, crawling, climbing, and twisting for prolonged periods.
  • Use of hands and fingers to handle and operate objects, tools, or controls, and to reach with hands and arms.
  • Specific vision requirements include close vision and the ability to adjust focus; ability to distinguish color in graphs, charts, etc.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and be understood; hearing ability requirements include the ability to interact with employees and customers.
