Salary Range: $20.00 - $20.00 Hourly

Description

El Puente seeks a dedicated and socially conscious Sports Facilitator/Coach to join our Cornerstone team. The position will utilize El Puente’s model for youth leadership and community development to nurture the next generation of leaders

The Sports Facilitator will foster an atmosphere of fun, learning, growth, and teamwork, serving as a mentor to El Puente’s youth members. They will create a competitive and welcoming sports program at our Taylor Wythe Cornerstone site. This position reports directly to the Program Director and Assistant Program Director. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, flexible, team-oriented environment, and is motivated by challenges. They will be able to build relationships with young people and their families, create collaborations, have a passion for social justice, and understand how movement and community-building work take place through liberatory, meaningful interactions and co-learning with youth members and their families.

Who we are:

Founded in 1982, El Puente is a youth-centered organization that uses the arts and education to advance social and environmental justice. Its mission is to inspire and nurture leadership for peace and justice, working as a human rights institution in NYC and Puerto Rico with national and international impact. El Puente creates community-led movements of self-determination through a holistic leadership and membership program model, as a high impact youth and community development organization. As a staff member of El Puente, the Sports Facilitator/ Coach is expected to uphold and work within the mission, philosophy and principles of the organization. 

El Puente integrates its activities and community campaigns within its six Youth Leadership Centers, and its nationally recognized public high school, the El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice. Organizing in North Brooklyn, Puerto Rico, and beyond, El Puente is at the forefront of community & youth development, and as such, initiates social policy locally and nationally.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all in a sports program by providing close supervision of all activities.

  • Plan and lead fun, challenging physical activities for participants.

  • Plan, promote, implement, supervise, and coordinate sports programs and special events.

  • Create opportunities for members to play competitively against other teams in a variety of sports

  • Maintain open communication with participants, staff, and members.

  • Create an atmosphere in which all participants can have fun, are safe and learn the importance of good principled athletics.

  • Incorporates El Puente’s principles to the sports program

  • Complete program documentation as assigned (registration, incident/accident reports, attendance and sign-in / sign-out sheets).

  • Promotes interest and participation in sports program through events, outreach and informational programs.

  • Perform Coach or Official duties as needed.

  • Actively participate in all training sessions and meetings.

  • Organize activities and duties that address the ongoing health and well-being of our staff and members.

  • Maintain inventory of equipment

  • Works closely with other staff members to best serve the youth in the program

  • Maintain clean work workspace consistent basis

  • Light Labor, picking up boxes, setting up spaces 

  • Represent the organization at public events when needed, including recruitment drives, meetings, coalitions, rallies, and press conferences.

  • Attend scheduled organizational trainings, including annual all staff retreat in September.

  • Additional duties as assigned. 

Qualifications


Requirements:

  • Must be knowledgeable and skilled in a variety of sports and have prior experience successfully teaching, coaching and instructing youth

  • Must be able to create and follow a curriculum

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • First Aid, CPR, and AED training preferred.

  • Spanish speakers are preferred. 

  • Be able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends

COVID-19 considerations:

All new hires must submit proof of vaccination.

Location:

This is a part-time position based in Brooklyn, NY. 

Schedule:

Generally Monday through Friday. Workdays and hours may shift depending on scheduling needs; the typical schedule will be 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Salary and Benefits:

$20 per hour and legal benefits.
