Denali Therapeutics is Hiring a Senior Manager, Vivarium and Research Operations Near South San Francisco, CA

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking an outstanding Senior Manager of Vivarium and Research Operations to join our Preclinical Translational Sciences group. The primary function of this group is to leverage the use of animal models for biomarker discovery as well as establishing PK/PD relationships with Denali's therapeutic candidates. The role will be critical in supporting preclinical work in Discovery and Development by providing direct oversight and supervision of activities in the animal research facility in addition to help in resourcing and execution of in vivo study activities, as needed.

Responsibilities (included but not limited to the following):

Approximately 70% of the time

* Serve as the expert and primary point of contact to respond to questions and concerns raised by researchers related to the care, use, health, and welfare of mice/rats and leverage basic knowledge and understanding of clinical observations and treatment methods to provide veterinary advice and care as needed

* Interact with scientists to understand their in vivo research needs, engaging them in a flexible and constructive manner to address matters of ethical review with a focus on 3Rs, humane endpoints, and avoidance of adverse effects

* Train research staff on various components of proper animal use including preparation of animals for surgery, anesthesia, surgical techniques, post-operative monitoring, injections, and sample collection

* Conduct orientation, safety and animal welfare training for vivarium users

* Ensure that in vivo study applications are performed in accordance with defined protocols and assist in the development, modification, and review of procedures and protocols, as needed

* Review/approve health reports for animal shipments coming in from non-approved vendors

* Serve as a voting member of the IACUC committee, participate and ensure readiness for IACUC inspections and meetings, and assist in other veterinary related IACUC activities

* Manage site DEA activities and processes

* Oversee procurement processes by helping to order supplies and equipment to sustain day-to-day operations of the animal facility

* Ability to interact cross-functionally with scientists, external vendors, IACUC, facilities, EH&S and management to problem solve and improve processes, as needed

* Responsibilities may require a work schedule that may include working outside of normal hours to provide assistance to queries and concerns in the animal facility

Approximately 30% of the time

* Ability to assist with in vivo study activities as needed across therapeutic programs which includes drug dosing in mice and rats by various routes of administration (IV, PO, IP, SQ, RO, IT), in life sample collections (i.e. blood collection via submental, tail vein, jugular, saphenous, etc. and urine collection) and necropsy procedures including terminal blood collection by cardiac puncture, perfusion of rodents and gross anatomical tissue harvesting

* Familiarity with genetically engineered rodent disease models and breeding colony management

* Ability to think creatively about ways to leverage novel techniques or tools for in vivo use

* Maintain accurate and complete laboratory records in a timely manner

* Responsibilities require a work schedule that may include working outside of normal work hours, to meet business demands such as weekends/Holidays to support dosing (on a rotating schedule)

Requirements

* BS/MS in Biology/Neuroscience/related field or equivalent in college / diploma credits and work experience combined

* Minimum 5 years experience of direct oversight and supervision of vivarium operations

* Prior management and leadership skills with the ability to successfully motivate, teach, and lead a team, fostering a collaborative and cohesive culture

* Extensive hands-on experience working with both mice and rats

* Must have strong work ethic, proficiency in animal welfare and overall knowledge for animal care and use, and skills to maintain a high-quality animal care program

* Independent, highly organized, great attention to detail, ability to multitask, and a strong desire to work in a highly collaborative and fast paced environment

* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

* Experience with computer applications such as MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint

Salary Range: $152,000.00 - $182,667.00. Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including a candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience.
