Job Description / Essential Elements:
Description
GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, monitors and patrols school buildings, grounds, parking areas, and areas adjacent to school property to maintain order and security; facilitates communication between students and staff to enhance understanding and promote a safe learning environment; provides interventions; teaches and reinforces behavior expectations; conducts wellness and academic checks for all students, including but not limited to English Learners, Foster, and low income; and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

With direction from a school administrator, incumbents in the classification monitor and patrol school buildings, grounds, and adjacent areas to maintain order and safety and to prevent illegal acts. This classification is distinguished from Yard Supervision Aide in that a Campus Security Officer supervises student conduct to prevent vandalism, theft, or other illegal activities, while a Yard Supervision Aide maintains order outside of the classroom, under the supervision of school administrators, teachers, or support staff.
Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
  1. Monitors and patrols school buildings, yards, parking areas, and adjacent areas to maintain order and safety and prevent illegal acts; circulates on and adjacent to school campus to prevent altercations and campus disorder.
  2. Observes and checks students or visitors who appear to be loitering and are out of class and determines appropriate action; checks and locks doors, windows and gates; operates a two-way radio as needed.
  3. Supervises student conduct to prevent vandalism, theft and other illegal activities; observes and reports to law enforcement agencies acts by persons that contribute to delinquency or injury of students.
  4. Provides interventions, teaches and reinforces expectations, and conducts wellness and academic checks for all students, including but not limited to English Learners, Foster, and low income.
  5. Controls crowds at athletic and special events to provide for physical safety of people and to prevent fights, property damage, and misconduct; assists law enforcement personnel in apprehending students suspected of crimes.
  6. Assists in directing emergency evacuations and other activities relating to the safety of individuals; observes and reports hazards or activities that might result in negligence or legal charges against the District or its personnel related to the treatment or safety of youth.
  7. Provides information to students concerning the law as it applies to juveniles and community resources.
  8. Prepares records and reports involving student referrals, crimes or incidents as assigned.
  9. Performs investigations related to crimes; investigates incidents prior to escorting students to the school administrator's office.
  10. Facilitates communications between students, school and District officials and staff to enhance understanding and promote a safe and secure environment; attends and participates in District conferences related to safety and security.
  11. Communicates with key leaders of local gangs; monitors local gang activities by establishing communications and effective relationships with gang leaders to minimize potential gang related incidents affecting campus security; monitors key gang members for weapon possession.
  12. Responds to teacher requests for assistance in the classroom; assists in incidents involving students with weapons and/or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
  1. California state penal code sections related to juveniles.
  2. Record keeping techniques.
  3. Basic investigation techniques.
  4. Adolescent behaviors.
  5. Skills utilized to maintain positive relationships with students and adults.
  6. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  7. Health and safety regulations.
  8. Individual and group behavior related to adolescents.
  9. Positive interventions and support.
Ability to:
  1. Monitor and patrol school buildings, yards, parking areas, and adjacent areas to maintain order and prevent illegal acts.
  2. Monitor and patrol campus to maintain order, safety, and security in a school setting.
  3. Assure student compliance with school and District policies and regulations.
  4. Prepare records and reports involving incidents, field interviews, accidents, vandalism, crime, gangs, student detention, and wellness and academic checks.
  5. Interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  6. Perform duties with patience, tact, and good judgment within established guidelines.
  7. Facilitate communications between students, school, and District officials and staff to enhance understanding and promote a safe and secure learning environment.
  8. Learn District organization, operations, policies and objectives.
  9. Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance.
  10. Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  11. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  12. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  13. Observe situations and accurately determine effective courses of action.
Education, Training, and Experience:
  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • One (1) year of full time paid or volunteer security experience.
Experience working with youth in an organized setting is highly desirable.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
  • A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's insurance policy.
  • Certification of completion of school security officer training course developed by the Bureau of Investigative Services of the Department of Consumer Affairs in consultation with the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training in accordance with SB 1626 and SB 390, pursuant to California Education Code Section 38001.5.
  • District security attire and equipment will be supplied at District expense.
