Duties

The ICU Nurse Practitioner (NP) Incumbent executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex patient care.Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Lead and organize delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care and discharge planning.
• Use advanced clinical knowledge/judgment to promote staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes.
• Function as an expert in clinical practice and/or areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities.
• Systematically evaluates current practice and formulating outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within an area of expertise.
• Guides, develops, and supports staff from a leadership perspective.
• Use professional standards of care, scientific evidence, and practice to evaluate programs and/or service activities.
• Supervise and coordinate activities of the physician health team to ensure optimal patient care services. Demonstrates leadership skills in improving patient care delivery systems.
• Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to assist the Critical Care Physician in diagnosing medical and surgical problems and prescribing necessary treatment and services for quality patient care.
• Take patient histories, conduct physical examinations, assess diagnostic impressions, formulate a medical plan, and record the data in the patient's record; write progress notes and narrative discharge summaries; prepare patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings.
• Order and schedule laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patient and family.
• Monitor progress of patients, and maintain record of each patient's progress.
• Participate in teaching medical students, physician assistant students, and nurse practitioner students in complex techniques and procedures, which are unique to a specific clinical setting. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
• Establish and maintain relationships within the service, facility management and other services that result in improved care.

  NOTE: Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a condition of employment and a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons.
