Overview

The Director of Corporate Accounting is a member of the Accounting Department with responsibilities related to the monthly financial statement closing, treasury support, governance reporting, and audits for NYSARC Inc-Nassau County Chapter and its Affiliates. Oversight includes multiple financial department staff supporting the financial close, including Payroll department operations. The position is responsible for optimizing the monthly financial close and year-end audit processes through regular monitoring, analysis, and reporting.

The Director of Corporate Accounting operates under the guidance of the Vice President of Finance and must be a team player with good communication, analytical, computer skills and current with generally accepted accounting principles including FASB pronouncements. These skills are required to effectively perform oversight, analyses and accounting work to support the financial statement close process, annual fiscal audits and regulatory reporting including NYS CHAR500 and IRS Form 990’s.

Responsibilities

Primary duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

Accounting and Financial Reporting

  • Ensure the monthly closings are executed and completed in a timely manner, including maintaining a monthly closing calendar.
  • Implement and enforce adherence to all accounting policies and procedures.
  • Prepare and issue monthly financial statements and accompanying management’s discussion and analysis narrative for managerial and governance reporting.
  • Perform account analysis and other month-end closing functions to produce timely and meaningful financial statements.
  • Review and approve timely preparation of account analysis and bank reconciliations.
  • Ensure appropriate record retention practices are deployed to ensure a sufficient audit trail with ease of access to journal entries, supporting documentation, etc.
  • Prepare financial reports for other external stakeholders including but not limited to The Arc NY, lenders and regulatory authorities.
  • Maintain and apply statistical reporting aimed at providing insights into the agency’s operations.
  • Maintain Restricted Net Assets tracking schedules. 

Treasury

  • Manage multiple banking platform user access and general maintenance ensuring appropriate segregation of duties with an emphasis on input and approval functions.
  • Oversee the preparation and distribution of daily cash reporting, approve book transfers, vendor ACH/ Wires
  • Maintain a rolling cash flow projection for each entity, with an emphasis on identifying low points to determine possible financing sources along with maximizing returns on savings accounts.

Payroll

  • Provide oversight to payroll functions including ensuring appropriate segregation of duties over input and approval functions.
  • Review and approve all payroll cycles ensuring proper controls exists for timely and accurate payroll tax and employee elective benefit withholding, manual check issuances and employer contribution payments
  • Support/ enhance the integration/ interface of the UKG-UltiPro payroll system with Sage Intacct to eliminate manual processes for recording payroll transactions. 

Fiscal Systems

  • Manage the accounting system including but not limited to user access and chart of accounts.
  • Partner with the Director of Financial Planning and Analysis to ensure cost allocations are current and appropriate.
  • Lead/ co-lead Fiscal technology transformation projects which may include but not limited to system optimization, enhancement, or replacement. 

Budgeting & Support

  • Support the annual budgeting process including ownership for certain administrative and social enterprises budgets.
  • Act as fiscal representative supporting the Administrative and Social Enterprises financial/ analysis needs. 

Audits & Regulatory reporting

  • Manage annual fiscal audits including but not limited to supplying timely and comprehensive account analyses and audit documentation .
  • Maintain close working relationships with the audit engagement team ensuring timely follow-through and completion of tasks.
  • Oversee the completion of the annual retirement plan audits.
  • Responsible for preparation/ review and timely filing of annual IRS Form 990’s and NYS CHA500.
  • Manage other required reporting specific to corporate functions, such as NYS Sales tax filings, Federal Fuel tax credits, NYS Abandoned Property filings, etc. 

Other:

  • Partner with the CFO, VP Finance and other department directors in preparing and expanding on fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Hire, train, develop and retain high performing staff.
  • Develop a dynamic team and cultivate a work environment that fosters teamwork.
  • Prepare and provide annual staff evaluations with an emphasis on supporting the staff’s continued development.
  • Other duties and strategic initiatives undertaken by the fiscal department.

Qualifications

Education and/ or experience required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting / finance AND
  • 10 years relevant experience, including five (5) years with multiple staff supervision preferably in a government funded agency.
  • Considered a Plus:
    • CPA, MBA
    • NYS OPWDD or Other NYS funded agency requiring a CFR filing
    • BlackBaud Financial Edge, Sage Intacct 

Skills, Licenses and/ or competencies required:

  • Strong knowledge of non-profit accounting pronouncements
  • Good skills in Microsoft Office, Excel and Word required.
  • Good professional written and oral communication skills – ability to relate and clearly communicate with operating management, financial staff and other departments.
  • Professional abilities to pay attention to detail, analyze financial data, solve financial problems, develop, and implement solutions and write procedures. Ability to initiate projects, prioritize and complete tasks on a timely basis with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong work ethic exhibiting a sense of urgency in completion of tasks, willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and occasional weekend work.
