**General** **Responsibility**

The Pilot Car Driver is responsible for safely operating the pilot car vehicle while navigating traffic through active construction work zones. This position may perform, flagging operations, laborer responsibilities, other duties on the paving crew as directed and necessary. This position receives close supervision related to specific work activities, assignments, methods, etc. Typically, this position receives frequent observation/inspection over job activities; instructions are detailed and assignments are typically short-term. Good judgment and common sense is required in all duties and any other tasks assigned. Normal work hours are day or night shift eight (8) to fourteen (14) hours Monday through Friday. Weekend work may be required depending on the contract.

**Essential Duties and Responsibilities**

- Drive the pilot car vehicle in the controlled work zone.

- Guide and direct dump trucks into work zone.

- Flag motorists to warn them of obstacles or repair work ahead.

- General laborer duties associated with asphalt paving.

- Required ability to shovel, rake, or handle other small tools.

- Equipment clean up as needed.

- May be asked to run small power tools.

- Assist in the placement, moving and dismantling or signs, barricades, cones, and other traffic control devices or duties.

- Performs other duties assigned

**EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE**

High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) preferred, but not required. Prior Asphalt paving/grading experience preferred, but not required.

**CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS**

Current North Carolina Drivers License required along with acceptable driving record.
