Burke County Schools is Hiring a Sub EC Bus Monitor Near Morganton, NC

Bus Monitor

Must be able to lift 50 lbs, Assist students on/off the school bus, monitor students, and assist the driver.

NATURE OF WORK

An employee in this class rides a school bus on an assigned route(s) and schedule to provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the possible advantage of the programs and offerings of the school system. The employee must exercise tact and courtesy in maintaining acceptable relations with parents/guardians of students transported and with school personnel. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Lifts and carries students with disabilities on and off the bus according to their needs.

Supervises student(s) as they board and leave the bus and cross streets.

Takes children into the building and helps them find their way.

Learns and adapts to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.

Manages student behavior and reports student discipline problems to the appropriate administrator.

Become familiar with all routes to and from the school campus to assist the driver.

Supervises students' use of seat belts, harnesses, or car seats.

Follows emergency procedures and helps driver administer first aid, if necessary.

Operates equipment according to established safety procedures.

Follows established procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, assisting students, etc.

Become familiar with and follow procedures established by transportation and special education offices.

Helps the driver keep the bus clean.

Assumes responsibility for performing the personal care required under the I.E.P. during student pick-up, transport, and unloading.

Maintains regular attendance.

Performs other related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Must be physically able to operate a school bus. Must quickly decelerate the bus and firmly apply the brake in an emergency. Must be able to turn the vehicle's steering wheel in a crisis. Must be able to begin in a seated position with seat belt fastened, parking brake released, and engine running, secure the bus, rise from the seat, exit through the rearmost emergency exit, and be in a position to assist passengers in going the bus within 20 seconds. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

Requires the ability to read correspondence, reports, instructions, etc. It requires speaking to people with poise, voice control, and confidence.

Requires ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.

Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in operating a school bus.

Requires the ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green, and amber.

Requires the ability to talk and hear. Requires sufficient hearing ability to distinguish warning sounds made by horns, screeching tires, sirens, grade-crossing alarms, and train whistles.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of safe and efficient practices and procedures used in the operation of a school bus.

Considerable knowledge of traffic laws and school bus regulations.

Considerable knowledge of safety regulations and standards for school buses.

General knowledge of Transportation Department instructions.

Ability to physically inspect the bus according to Transportation Department instructions.

Ability to detect and report observable mechanical defects or failures on the school bus.

Ability to maintain the discipline of students assigned to ride the school bus.

Ability to maintain a clean school bus.

Ability to complete required reports.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in applying standards to various work situations.

Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with parents/guardians, students, and school personnel.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
