Communications and Outreach Assistant

Overview:

Save the Harbor is a dynamic and successful nonprofit Boston Harbor advocacy organization made up of thousands of people from across the region. Save the Harbor led the effort to create the Boston Harbor Islands National Park and transformed South Boston’s beaches into the cleanest urban beaches in the United States. None of this would be possible without dedicated community members, partners, full- and part-time staff.

Save the Harbor/Save the Bay is seeking a part time Communications and Outreach Assistant to support in maintaining our digital and social media presence, as well as assisting in the communication to our donors, program participants, and community members. This position is for a detail oriented and personable individual with an interest in communications, social media, community engagement, and outreach. Under the direction of the Director of Partnerships & Program Development, the Communications and Outreach Assistant will support the daily communications and outreach for the office.

Responsibilities:

Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Support Save the Harbor/Save the Bay by cultivating an engaging media and press presence following the annual content calendar.
  • Conduct community outreach via phone, email, and in person visits for all Save the Harbor initiatives including participatory budgeting, summer hiring, the annual polar plunge fundraiser, our Better Beaches program, annual winter appeal, and public hearings.
  • Draft graphics for social media using Canva
  • Scheduling social media posts using the Meta business suite
  • Draft press releases for Save the Harbor initiatives and fundraisers.
  • Research and develop outreach databases for multiple projects.
  • Review social media analytics and create plans to increase engagement and online presence.
  • Attend and support Save the Harbor/Save the Bay events and projects – some events may be on nights and weekends.

Skills & Knowledge Desired:

  • In depth knowledge of Boston’s neighborhoods, familiarity with Boston Public Schools and local organizations, and interest in community engagement
  • Comfort and confidence with public speaking and presenting Save the Harbor Initiatives to large groups of community members.
  • Experience with social media
  • Familiarity with traditional media (print/TV/radio)
  • Basic graphic design skills, mostly using Canva
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing and verbal skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in completing tasks

Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, while being able to prioritize

  • Dependability and flexibility in a fast-paced environment
  • Computer skills, including usage of Outlook and Google Drive, and Canva
  • Interest and connection to the mission of Save the Harbor/Save the Bay
  • Must be able to get to and from community outreach obligations primarily in Boston, but also including Nahant, Lynn, Revere, Winthrop, Quincy, and Hull. Candidates with a vehicle and drivers license are preferred.
  • Proficiency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, Mandarin and/or Cape Verdean Creole preferred, but not required.

Terms

  • Position Timeline: November ‘23-February ‘24, with potential for extension based on work performance.
  • Hours: 20 hours per week, primarily Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, some nights/weekends may be required
  • Hybrid work environment: Our Boston Fish Pier office is open Tuesdays and Thursdays

Save the Harbor/Save the Bay expects applicants to be able to commit 20 hours per week to the organization, with occasional evening and/or weekend events. We are flexible on scheduling around classes and other such obligations. At least one day per week in office is required.

Compensation

$17.50/hr
