3. Job Summary
Responsible for the daily testing of patient samples in all areas of the clinical laboratory according to
established policies and procedures to include: operation of computerized and automated instrumentation,
quality control and maintenance, test results distribution, referral testing, and specimen collection.
Knowledgeable of the principles upon which lab tests are based and can recognize appropriate questionable
and critical results. Possesses the ability to organize workload for maximum efficiency, accuracy and ensures
that reports are legible. Oversees and manages the assigned department including staff, education, quality
control, quality assurance and the overall quality of Lab test results.
4. Job Duties and Responsibilities
Supervisory responsibilities
1. Is accessible to testing personnel at all times to provide on-site, telephone or electronic support.
2. Provides day to day supervision of personnel performing moderate and high complex testing.
3. Monitors test analysis and specimen examination to ensure that acceptable levels of analytical
performance are maintained.
4. Fulfills other responsibilities as delegated by the lab director or technical supervisor including:
5. Resolving technical problems and ensures that remedial action is taken whenever test systems deviate
from the labs established performance specifications.
6. Ensuring patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and test systems
are functioning properly.
7. Providing orientation and training to all testing personnel
8. Evaluating and documenting the performance of all testing personnel.
9. Evaluates competency assessment and observation of technical skills. Assures that testing personnel
maintain their competency to perform test procedures and report tests results promptly, accurately and
proficiently.
10. Encourages and promotes a work environment that facilitates team efforts, positive

12. Performs Quality Assurance activities, is an integral team player in the effectiveness of the quality

Quality Control and Maintenance
1. Responsible for performing, recording and reviewing daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually all
quality control and equipment maintenance according to established laboratory policy and procedure.
Ensures staff are following Westgard rules for quality control acceptability.
2. Documents all correction action according to laboratory policy.
3. Review Levey-Jennings graphs for quality control shifts or trends.
Inventory Control
1. Maintains proper rotation of supplies, dates and initials upon receipt.
2. Orders supplies as needed, notifies supervisor of any inventory issues.
Patient Testing
1. Ensures that the quality of a specimen has been maintained and is suitable prior to testing.
2. Oversees and performs patient testing within the department according to established policy and
procedure in a proficient and in a timely manner.
3. Documents all comments related to patient testing in the LIS.
4. Oversees all technical staff and ensures that staff are following laboratory policies & procedures.
Laboratory Information System
1. Oversees the all staff in ensuring they are properly utilizing the LIS for laboratory functions.
2. Pulls work lists frequently, to ensure all testing is resulted.
3. Has complete working knowledge of all aspects of the LIS.
Other
1. Assists Lab Director with the monitoring and collecting of data.
2. Attends continuing education as required by the professional regulations.
3. Responsible for other duties as assigned by the Lab Director.
4. Responsible for assuring daily work is completed and any problems are resolved before leaving.
5. Follows all departmental safety policies, OSHA standards and reports safety hazards to the Lab Director.
6. Attends OSHA and Biomedical Waste annual training.
7. Follows compliance guidelines for confidentiality and HIPAA.
8. Recognizes and performs duties in an independent manner.

5. Physical Demands
Requires prolonged standing, frequent sitting, bending, stooping, and Occasional lifting up to 40 pounds
Requires normal range of hearing, color- vision and manual dexterity sufficient to operate laboratory
instrumentation, keyboard, telephone, fax, photocopier and other office equipment as needed. Requires
ability to work under stressful conditions and possess good communication skills.
6. Working Condition
The occupant of this position spends 95% of the time inside an air-conditioned work area. The employee is
exposed to biohazardous and chemical materials which require personal protective equipment.
