Nestled near White Rock Lake in beautiful Lake Highlands, a suburb of East Dallas, the School is centrally located in the heart of Dallas. This 1st-12th grade co-ed school with 150 total enrolled students is marked by a rich and colorful history. With over 50 years of service, Dallas Academy reached a milestone in 2015-2016 by gaining the distinction of being the oldest school in the State of Texas to serve students with learning differences.

TITLE: School Nurse (2024-2025 School Year)

The School Nurse is responsible for the school health services. The position is a part-time position, Monday – Friday on school days.

REPORTS TO: Head of School

Primary School Nurse Role:

Plan, implement and evaluate school health services. The school nurse follows all policies of Dallas Academy. The school nurse will serve as an 11-month school employee.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • BLS CPR/AED/First Aid Certified
  • Current valid Nursing License from the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners

Additional Knowledge/Skills:

  • Physical, mental, social and emotional nursing assessment skills
  • Nursing skills and knowledge specific to pediatric/adolescent care and school health nursing
  • Expertise in student specific management plans for acute and chronic health conditions
  • Ability to work autonomously in a school clinic setting
  • Strong organizational, communication, mentoring, coaching and interpersonal skills Proficient computer skills

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain accurate, complete and confidential health records for all students.
  • Reviews and evaluates immunization records for compliance with state and TCCB-ED requirements. Submit annual immunization reports as required by state law.
  • Plans and implements school health protocols for students with special health needs and communicates that plan to appropriate faculty and staff. Educates faculty/staff and coaches on the use of epinephrine auto-injector devices.
  • Maintain accurate daily log of student visits to the clinic.
  • Dispense and control all medications for students and maintain accurate documentation related to such.
  • Assume responsibility for the management of students’ acute, chronic and emergency health conditions. Notifies parents/legal guardians of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school and the health community; provide ongoing health counseling as indicated within the scope of nursing practice. Educates students, faculty and staff on health-related topics including CPR/AED and First Aid training and certification. Serve as a health advocate for students.
  • Review excessive absence reports and notify Dean of Students of students with significant acute or chronic illness contributing to excessive absences.
  • Notify and work collaboratively with School Counselor regarding students in crisis/students with psychosocial health issues and students with extended absences related to medical conditions.
  • Notify and work collaboratively with school athletic director and coaches regarding student athletic injuries, medical conditions impacting athletic participation, and concussions.
  • Maintain safe and clean clinic environment. Order, stock and maintain clinic supplies.
  • Administer first aid to ill or injured faculty, staff and visitors. Secures medical care for emergencies as needed.
  • Maintain certification in BLS CPR/AED/First Aid and vision, hearing and spinal screening. Conduct hearing, vision and spinal screening of students as mandated by state law, making appropriate referrals and follow up as indicated. Submit annual reports to the state.
  • Assist athletic director in the maintenance of campus AED’s. Inspect and maintain a log of monthly AED checks.
  • Assist in the control of communicable diseases through early detection, surveillance and reporting with follow-up of communicable diseases to Dallas County Health and Human Services.
  • Conduct annual Blood Borne Pathogen training for faculty and staff.
  • Coordinate annual flu vaccines for faculty/staff and covered family members.
  • Maintain professional/technical knowledge and skills by attending pertinent conferences, reviewing professional publications and participating in professional nursing/school nursing organizations. Obtain CEU’s per Texas Board of Nursing licensure requirements.
  • Serve as a resource in promoting health careers and provide leadership and support for faculty and staff wellness programs.
  • Perform any other duties as directed by Head of School.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

All employees of Dallas Academy are at-will employees, Terms of employment are outlined in employee’s contracts. Employees are provided with competitive pay. This part-time position does not include benefits.
