City of Middleton is Hiring a Paramedic - Part-time Near Middleton, WI

Paramedics perform highly responsible work involving responding to 911 emergency calls for help. Efficient and immediate basic and advanced life support measures and safe transport to appropriate medical facilities are provided to the critically ill and injured under protocols established by the State of Wisconsin Department of Health Services and local medical direction. Paramedics must also be prepared for and able to respond in a calm and professional manner to any type of emergency including, but not limited to intercepts, mutual aid or closest ALS requests, structure fires, hazardous materials and mass casualty incidents or MABAS alarms, weapons of mass destruction events, active assailant and law enforcement standby.
Paramedics must have a pleasant personality enabling them to quickly establish a rapport with patients. Paramedics must also exhibit good judgment under stress, be clean and neat in appearance, possess good moral character and personal accountability, and maintain a high level of emotional stability with psychological adaptability.
Critical thinking and communication are essential skills for Paramedics to provide appropriate patient care in rapidly evolving scenes and conditions. Paramedics are flexible in their ability to work independently, as a team member, or as a leader. To effectively and safely perform the duties of this profession Paramedics must be in good physical health and display motor coordination and strength sufficient to provide emergency care in and lift and remove patients from challenging environments.
Other duties while not responding to emergency calls include inspection, cleaning and maintenance of the ambulance, supplies, and equipment; continuing education and refresher training; station housekeeping and various tasks as assigned by the EMS Chief.
Administrative Details:
This position is a Non-Regular Permanent Part-time position. Part-time positions are not eligible for participation in the Wisconsin Retirement System. Other benefits available are dependent on the status to which applicants are hired. Part time

Additional Pay Rate Information:
The starting rate for all Paramedics is $23.66/hr for 2024
Full-time paramedic rates advance per the pay schedule in any future applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
This position is:
  • FLSA: Non-Exempt
  • Pay Basis: Hourly
  • Schedule: 48 hours per week with mandatory overtime required.
  • Compensation per collective bargaining agreement.
  • Represented.
  • Non-Supervisory.
Essential Duties
  • Respond to predetermined types of emergencies requiring paramedic services, including intercepts, structure fires and hazardous materials (HazMat) incidents, mass casualty incidents (MCI), weapons of mass destruction (WMD) events, active assailant and law enforcement standby.
  • Establish Incident Command and run a Multiple Casualty Incident (MCI), including requesting and managing any additional resources that may be needed. Fill or assign the required ICS positions of EMS Branch Director, Triage Group Supervisor, Transportation Group Supervisor, or Treatment Group Supervisor.
  • Perform thorough patient assessments, determine the nature and extent of illness or injuries, and establish priorities for emergency care.
  • Determine and provide, within the context of patient care guidelines and physician oversight, the most appropriate treatment for patients out of the hospital, including appropriate mode of patient transport and destination.
  • Render appropriate basic emergency care as indicated and advanced life support according to established medical protocols including advanced level skills.
  • Assist in extricating patients who are entrapped in vehicles or other confined environments.
  • Secure patients and move them to the ambulance, transport patients in an emergency vehicle to an appropriate medical facility, and transfer care of the patient to emergency department staff.
  • Safely perform all aspects of patient care, handling, and transportation utilizing all equipment and devices maintained by Middleton EMS.
  • Perform basic ambulance inventory and operational maintenance tasks, daily station duties, and other related job duties as assigned by the EMS Chief. Examples include: inspection, stocking, washing, cleaning, and fueling of the ambulance; staff development and training; EMS supply and equipment inventory/acquisition; computer data entry/reporting; infection control; strategic planning; continuous quality improvement; etc.
Marginal Duties
  • Provide standby emergency care at local events including, but not limited to, local school sporting events; 5 and 10K runs; marathons and IronMan; and any other local contracted event
  • Attend and participate in public relations events.
  • Conduct public information and education programs.
Knowledge
  • Comprehensive knowledge of applied medicine in both basic and advanced life support as defined by the State of Wisconsin Department of Health Services Paramedic Scope of Practice and department medical direction.
  • Familiar with radio usage and local radio protocol, cell phone and equipment operation.
  • Familiar with the principles and practices of the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
  • Familiar with basic computer functions and ImageTrend Elite or similar patient care report software platform.

  • Ability to exercise high levels of judgment and critical thinking to select and implement treatment modes and address multiple, complex issues under extremely stressful conditions involving human physical and emotional trauma.
  • Ability to calmly communicate professionally and effectively with patients and family members who are under duress regarding medical condition, other crew members, fire department personnel, law enforcement personnel, related health care professionals, and the general public.
  • Ability to provide input and oversight to Basic Life Support (BLS) crews regarding treatment and transportation options as needed.
  • Ability to accurately recall information and events associated with emergency services.
  • Ability to document a detailed and accurate patient care report.
  • Ability to exercise judgment in traffic to ensure passenger and vehicle safety.
Education
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of paramedic training by an accredited school or training facility.
Training
  • Must possess a current Wisconsin Paramedic license or be eligible for licensure by meeting the reciprocity and licensing requirements set forth by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Division of Public Health, Wisconsin EMS Unit, EMS Licensing and Certification.
  • Must have current American Heart Association BLS for Health Care Providers course completion card.
  • Must have current American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) course completion card.
  • Must have current American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) course completion card.
  • Must have a valid Wisconsin driver’s license, or be eligible to obtain a Wisconsin driver’s license, with a driving record that meets the conditions of insurability prescribed by Dane County Division of Emergency Medical Services.
  • Must have completed a formal course curriculum in Emergency Vehicle Operation (EVOC) or Coaching the Emergency Operator Course (CEVO).
  • Must have current Weapons of Mass Destruction course completion certificate
Experience
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Preferred minimum of two (2) years relevant experience working as a field paramedic in a pre-hospital 911 system response setting or equivalent experience working as a paramedic in an emergency department setting.
