Primary Job Purpose 

The Laboratory Technician I is responsible for assisting the Scientists with testing submitted samples, preparing laboratory solutions, maintaining laboratory equipment, calibration activities, quality control, data verification, results reporting, and assisting with facility maintenance. 

Job Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare laboratory solutions and media according to set instructions. 
  • Assist with testing on submitted samples according to Standard Operating Procedures. 
  • Assist with inventory, and research and ordering of supplies. 
  • Perform equipment and facility maintenance, equipment calibration/verification, laboratory cleaning, and other general laboratory tasks as needed. 
  • Assist with laboratory projects to ensure project deadlines are met. 
  • Ensure that laboratory processes operate in compliance with standard operating procedures and regulatory requirements. 
  • Document work completed accurately and make timely corrections to errors. Assist with internal review (QC) of laboratory data. 
  • Maintain competency on test methods. 

Qualification, Training and Experience Requirements 

  • A high school diploma or equivalent, a desire to work as a part of a team, and
  • 0-2 years’ relevant experience and demonstration of competency in job role-specific requirements

Physical Requirements 

  • While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to communicate effectively by talking, listening, reading, and writing in a professional manner as defined by our code of conduct 
  • At all times, be sober and clear of influence of any substances including alcohol and legal recreational drugs, which may affect the ability of user, safety of animals and other staff members, and work quality in any manner. 
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs. floor to waist 50ft back to floor. 
  • Ability to work the duration of an eight-hour shift, on your feet, in constant motion. 
  • Comply with any pertinent local legislative requirements and any additional physical requirements as determined by the Occupational Risk Evaluation Profile for the position. 

Work Environment 

  • The employee is required to:
  • Work in an office / laboratory
  • Be available and work during normal work hours as well as after-hours according to pre-arranged departmental schedules that may require evening, weekend, and public holiday work. 
  • Work in an environment that exposed to zoonotic diseases and animal pathogens. 
  • May have exposure to fumes, airborne particles and/or toxic or caustic chemicals. 
  • May have exposure to zoonotic diseases and animal pathogens. 
  • May be exposed to sharps or cuts. 
  • The noise level is the work environment is moderate. 
  • Thorough training in safety practices and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) minimizes the potential risk of the exposures. 

Compliance Requirements 

  • Perform duties according to quality guidelines (e.g., ISO 17025, GCP/GLP as relevant), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Work Instructions (WIs), and in line with the relevant study protocols or study plans. 
  • Perform duties in compliance with relevant legislative and regulatory requirements. 
  • Observe occupational health and safety regulations and comply with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements as required for the position.
  • Identify, record and report incidents, maintenance faults and issues impacting animal welfare, biosafety, and study conduct. 
  • Work outcomes and behavior should be in accordance with company and departmental standards as well as values and ethics. Continuous evaluation and/or assessment may be used to determine compliance thereto. 
  • Meet continuous professional development requirements, if relevant, inclusive of registration and points requirements with the relevant council, institutions, etcetera 
  • Continuous training, development and supervision are mandatory to comply with company policies, procedures, guidelines, and job role standards.
