Here at Southeastern Guide Dogs, we are in the business of giving FREEDOM to the visually impaired and veteran communities – and it begins in our Canine University where our kind, dedicated technicians provide the utmost care for our dogs in training (AKA “future superheroes”). Our Canine University Technicians take on varied duties that may include feeding, bathing, medicating, and maintaining a clean kennel environment to support physical health as well as providing enrichment and engagement for the psychological health of the dogs in our care. These technicians work with adult dogs ages 14-24 months

This role also paves a pathway for Technicians who are interested in a career development program, with possible advancement into one of our Guide Dog or Service Dog Training Apprenticeship programs. These Apprenticeships offer a 3-year education in dog training and reward the employee with a nationally-recognized Certification and career as a Guide Dog Trainer or Service Dog Trainer.

Here are some things you’ll learn:

• Canine basic skills and cues
• Dog behavior and body language
• Canine first aid and medication administration

The qualifications you’ll need:

• A clear understanding of the general care and wellbeing of adult dogs in kennel preferred
• Ability to properly interpret treatment plans and prescriptions and administer medications
• Ability to interpret and implement training plans set by instructors for specific dogs
• Must have mental processes for reasoning, remembering, mathematics and language ability (reading, writing, and speaking the English language) for food preparation and schedules
• Ability to understand and properly follow kennel procedures and strict disease control protocols
• Physical stamina to be on your feet bending, lifting, scooping, and hosing as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds.
• Position will work in the outside elements 70% of the day
• Ability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays

Other Important Details

• Technicians are exposed to animal body fluids, medications, and cleaning chemicals
• They are often required to interact with our guests and volunteers
• Part time Technicians will work 20-27 hours per week
• Shifts vary between early 1st shift (morning), 2nd shift (late afternoon/evening) and 3rd shift (overnight)
• The pay this position is $15/hour
