Museum of Fine Arts is Hiring a Curatorial Research Associate, Art of Europe Near Boston, MA

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, seeks a part-time Curatorial Research Associate (CRA) to work under the direction of the Chair of Art of Europe, aiding with the research, administration, and implementation of Art of Spain (working title). This exhibition, which is anticipated to open in Boston in December 2025 and then travel to up to three external venues, will explore the plurality of Spanish art through the transmission of ideas across chronology, media, and geography. Highlighting the strengths of the MFA’s permanent collection, the checklist will include paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, textiles, and works on paper from Spain and its territories from the 15th century to the present day.

Reporting to the Chair of Art of Europe, the CRA will carry out a range of exhibition-related tasks. This position offers an opportunity to engage in all curatorial aspects of exhibition planning, execution, and evaluation. Administrative tasks and research will combine with exposure to the teams at the MFA charged with exhibition preparation, design, and installation. The candidate will be challenged to think expansively and offer creative ideas for integrative exhibition displays and engaging programming. The CRA will be in regular communication with a variety of colleagues at museums in Europe and the Americas, private collectors, scholars, researchers, and artists. The position will work closely on administrative matters with the Exhibitions and Collections Partnership teams, and with prospective and confirmed partner institutions. This position will help refine the checklist, generate loan request letters, and maintain paper and digital files. The CRA will help plan the exhibition catalogue and may be invited to contribute to the publication as part of the role.

This is a part-time position for 17.5 hours/week for a one-year term, with the possibility of a one year renewal.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

• Advanced degree in European art history, or equivalent related experience, demonstrating scholarly ability through publications, conference papers, and other activities.

• Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish.

• Experience working in museums or related setting, preferably within a curatorial department.

• Committed to collaboration with others to achieve the best outcome, the successful candidate is an excellent and timely decision maker able to move plans and objectives forward.

• Strong sense of accountability for achieving stated objectives and demonstrable experience doing so.

• Exceptional verbal and written communication, with demonstrated presentation skills.

• Organized and able to effectively and efficiently manage multiple priorities with competing deadlines.
