UW SYSTEM OFFICIAL TITLE: Academic Advisor

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

This position reports to the Director of Academic Advising & Retention and engages students in decision making processes and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as course selection and degree requirements. Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development and delivery of academic advising related events and programs. Works to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.

This position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources.
  • Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures.
  • Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies.
  • Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum.
  • Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers.
  • Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college.
  • Additional responsibilities, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree at time of application
  • Two years of experience working in a higher education setting

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree in counseling, Student Affairs or related field
  • Experience with integrated student information systems (Peoplesoft, EAB Navigate, ImageNow)
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Hmong, Somali, or Oneida

SPECIAL NOTES:

Position is a full-time Academic Staff appointment. The work hours for this position will be 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Occasional early evening and/or weekend availability, depending on department needs is expected. Some professional development travel required for training and skill development. Weekly travel between the Manitowoc and Sheboygan campuses will be required to support the students at each location. Occasional travel to other campus locations will be required for trainings, retreats, and advising related events. Hybrid work opportunities may exist at the discretion of advising leadership, and depending on staffing needs of the campuses.

SALARY INFORMATION

Minimum salary of $40,000.

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

BENEFIT DETAILS

UW System provides an excellent benefits package to meet the diverse needs of its employees. This includes several health insurance options, with annual deductibles as low as $250/individual and $500/family. Our benefits package also includes dental, vision, several life insurance options, AD&D and Accident insurance and Flexible Spending and Health Savings Accounts. We participate in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS), where employer contributions begin immediately and employees are fully vested after 5 years of service. The UW System also provides supplemental retirement savings programs including a 403(b) and Deferred Compensation.

In addition, employees receive several types of paid leave benefits, which are prorated for employees working less than 100%. This includes 9 legal holidays, 36 hours of personal holiday and between 96-130 hours of sick leave annually. Employees earn 13-27 days of vacation each year, depending on years of service and employment type.
