Central Mutual Insurance Company is Hiring a Remote Director Of Property Claims

Location: Hybrid Work Model
Central’s Director of Property Claims heads our property line. This individual plays a critical role in achieving our mission in Claims to deliver exceptional hospitality to our policyholders, achieve optimal claim outcomes and operate with a high degree of efficiency. This individual is fully accountable for developing and executing line of business strategies as well as leading, managing and developing Property teams. They are responsible for defining technical excellence for property lines, controlling reserves and payment accuracy of complex claims up to a certain threshold, retroactive file review and feedback loops with underwriting, loss control, actuarial and other key stakeholders.
In addition to leading high performing teams focused on managing Central’s most complex and/or high severity claims, this individual is expected to foster a culture of technical excellence, provide input into property management training efforts and own various Claims processes such as proactive round tables and large loss/reinsurance reporting.
What you will do:
  • Defines technical excellence for the Property claims at all levels of the Claims organization including providing input and recommendations to executive management
  • Thoughtfully organize and Develops and maintains a highly efficient operating model for Property Claims
  • Ongoing development and delivery of a line of business strategy for Property Claims; ensures Property Claims professionals and the broader Claims organization are aware and adhering to the line of business strategy
  • Maintains a deep understanding of the Property Insurance landscape; attend applicable industry events/conferences; conduct line of business research to identify and understand trends and make adjustments to strategy accordingly
  • Performs retroactive file reviews on select files to learn from Claims’ successes and failures and apply learnings over time; contribute to Claims’ vision of being the most intelligent organization possible
  • Communicates emergent strategies to Claims and the broader organization
  • Develops robust feedback loops with Underwriting, Loss Control and Actuarial; coordinates/facilitates quarterly (and ad hoc) meetings; works closely with Regional Claims Managers to prepare comprehensive agendas
  • Ensures reserve and payment accuracy; provide reserve and payment authority up to a certain threshold; develop and maintain appropriate control mechanisms
  • In collaboration with other members of the Claims Leadership team and the broader organization, develops and maintains Central’s large loss and reinsurance reporting processes and capabilities
  • Leads a team of technical Claims professionals comprised of one or more Consultants providing authority and guidance on claims as well as a team of Property Large Loss Specialists preforming technical claims handling
  • Responsible for the ongoing management of staff by attracting talent, setting clear direction, providing appropriate guidance, managing performance, recognizing contributions and developing capabilities
  • Administers day-to-day operations of Central’s Property Large Loss Claims Organization
  • Develops and manages Central’s CAT program including monitoring of developing risks, CAT procedures and processes including deployment of Central staff and external partners
  • Maintains Central’s CAT reporting to key stakeholders and work with Risk and Marketing on approving proper CAT internal and external stakeholder communications; provides requested CAT data and information to internal stakeholders including CL, PL, LC and actuarial as needed
  • Works with the Risk Department on reinsurance reporting of CAT losses
  • Coordinates statutory CAT communications with state Departments of Insurance; maintain and file annual CAT reports and plans required by state Departments of Insurance; maintains and updates Property LOB staffing information as required by state Departments of Insurance
  • Makes informed strategic and operational business decisions by identifying and analyzing trends and improvement opportunities through the effective use of resources, tools and metrics
What you will bring:
  • Master’s degree in or related field and 6 years of Property claims handling experience in the Insurance industry including 2 years of management experience
  • Or Bachelor’s degree in or related field and 8 years of Property claims handling experience in the Insurance industry including 2 years of management experience
  • Or 10 years of Property claims handling experience in the Insurance industry including 2 years of management experience
  • Technical and business management acumen; advanced claims investigations and resolution skills; advanced knowledge of insurance and claims handling principles, practices and procedures
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects and teams
  • Knowledge of claims, loss control, underwriting and premium audit disciplines
  • Strong leadership skills, including coaching, team-building, and conflict resolution
  • Advanced project management skills including time and risk management, resource prioritization, and project structuring
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills, including negotiation, presentation, and influence skills
  • Advanced business acumen, technical knowledge, and extensive knowledge in applications and technologies
  • Strong multi-tasking and prioritization skills
  • Good understanding of Central Insurance’s policies and processes
Preferred Qualifications:
  • CPCU, SCLA or AIC designations
  • Claims experience in both Personal Lines and Commercial Lines
