Job Description NREL’s Hydrogen Production, Power, & Storage Systems Group within the Energy Conversion & Storage Systems Center is seeking a journeyman level technician to assist with the construction, integration, and maintenance of hydrogen technologies and associated systems. This position performs hands on technical support for building efforts of fluid, electrical, controls and mechanical systems. Work will be performed under the supervision of research engineers and include in tasks associated with building and maintaining systems. This work will provide valuable support for demonstrating and de-risking hydrogen production, storage and use integrated with renewable energy sources. Duties Include Work well both independently and in a team. Interact professionally with NREL engineers, technicians, and safety personnel. Document actions for safety and communication. Work with a mindset that prioritizes safety in a research environment. Follow all ES&H policies and procedures to maintain a safe working environment in the presence of pressure, electrical, mechanical and chemical hazards. Follow complex standard operating procedures, safety documentation, and operator’s manuals. Work outside approximately 70% of the time throughout all four of Colorado’s seasons. Knowledge of compressed gas safety, storage and plumbing systems including a wide range of operating pressures up to 15,000 psi. Level III - Full knowledge of specialized focused support functions. Complete acquaintance with and understanding of the general and detailed aspects of the supported activities, and their practical applications to problems and situations ordinarily encountered. Proficient in research techniques and practices. Solid communication, interpersonal, project management and customer relations skills. Level II - Substantial acquaintance with and understanding of general aspects of the job with a broad understanding of the detailed aspects of the job. Intermediate to advanced skills in research techniques and practices. Good written, verbal, team, interpersonal and communication skills. . Basic Qualifications Level III - High School Diploma or equivalent and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Level II - High School Diploma or equivalent and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. * Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date. Additional Required Qualifications Experience working with standard workshop tooling including hand tools, including, cordless power tools, corded power tools, torque wrenches, and electrical test equipment, leak detection equipment and ladder work. Ability to accurately operate fixed machine shop tooling: drill press and bandsaw. Understand the characteristics of materials used in construction, such as strength, pressure rating and temperature ratings, chemical compatibility, and thermal expansion. Competent pipe, tube and conduit fitter. Able to accurately plan, draw, bend and install complex pipe, tube and conduit runs and experience working with different pipe connection and sealing systems: NPT, NPSM, cone and thread, Swagelok, and flanged gasket connections. Ability to read and understand Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and to identify equipment in the field using drawings and equipment tags. Experience with Lock Out Tag Out procedures and applications. Experience with planning, deploying, completing, and recording planned maintenance tasks. Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills using systematic approach. Must be comfortable working in a professional culture for a government organization. Preferred Qualifications Experience with hoisting and rigging. Understand and identify the hazards associated with working with voltages up to 1000V. Demonstrate successfully support for diverse customers in a research environment, managing customer relationships, communicating timelines, and confirming customer satisfaction. Ability to confidently operate, forklifts, aerial lifts. Demonstrated experience fabricating custom equipment, pumps and compressors, chillers and heaters, pressure system plumbing, hydraulics and pneumatics, component and materials acquisition and assembly etc. . Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week) Job Profile: Research Technician III / Annual Salary Range: $55,400 - $91,400 Job Profile: Research Technician II / Annual Salary Range: $49,100 - $78,600 NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
