Position : 4th Grade Teacher

Orton Academy is a tuition free public charter school for 2nd-8th grade located in central Colorado Springs, within the D11 boundary.

Orton Academy cultivates an inclusive environment where learning is accessible to students with a dyslexia profile and reading and written language difficulties. The school grounds itself in the vision that every child in Colorado Springs can reach their fullest potential. By removing reading barriers and providing dyslexia appropriate core instruction and dyslexia therapy firmly rooted in the Science of Reading, Orton Academy allows students to not only increase their access to reading, but to also increase their access to a more fulfilling life experience.

Position Summary: Orton Academy’s teachers create flexible and differentiated grade level programs favorable to learning and personal growth for students with reading difficulties, especially dyslexia. The teacher will establish effective rapport with students; motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for preparation for secondary education, vocational school, and/or acquiring employment, in accordance with each student’s ability; and establishes good relationships with parents and with other staff members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following statements of essential functions and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of all personnel within this position. Actual duties and responsibilities may vary depending on building assignment and other factors.

  • Maintains a classroom that is academically, socially/emotionally, and physically safe
  • Implements by instruction and action the school's philosophy of education and instructional content standards and benchmarks (goals and objectives)
  • Provides effective instructional strategies and activities for all students in the classroom
  • Explains learning objectives and student expectations
  • Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of the principal or his/her designated school leader
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides differentiated and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student
  • Sets behavior expectations and consequences (positive and negative) that are clear and consistently enforced
  • Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students
  • Provides accommodations necessary for the success and positive well-being of students with characteristics of dyslexia and related comorbidities
  • Uses patience and seeks to understand student needs unique to this population
  • Utilizes grading patterns that are fairly administered and based on identified criteria
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required
  • Uses assessment/data to improve learning and instruction
  • Provides opportunities for student goal setting, reflection and self-assessment
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, school policy, and administrative regulation
  • Makes provision for availability to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms
  • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s)
  • Assumes responsibility for instruction, duties, supervision of students, and required meetings at designated times
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required
  • Makes every student, parent, and visitor feel noticed, welcomed, and valued
  • Interacts with students, staff and parents in a positive and professional manner
  • Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law, administrative regulations, and procedures of the school district.
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems
  • Actively participate in full implementation of the School Improvement Plan
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities
  • Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisors

Physical Demands

The work is mostly walking and standing with periods of sitting. Typical positions require workers to lift and carry up to 30 pounds; climb stairs; bend and crouch; reach, hold, grasp and turn objects; use fingers to operate computer or typewriter keyboards; demonstrate an athletic activity or physical exercise; and feel the shape, size, and temperature of objects; and physically restrain students. The work requires the ability to speak normally, to use normal or aided vision and hearing, and to detect odors.

Supervision & Technical Responsibilities: This position does not supervise other employees.

Budget Responsibility: This position does not have any direct budget responsibility.

Education & Training :

  • Bachelor's degree in education or other related discipline
  • Valid CDE teacher licensure with appropriate endorsement

Experience:

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching of students with disabilities. 

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

  • Understands and demonstrates classroom management/instructional strategies to support student achievement
  • Integrates technology skills to support the content area(s) and 21st Century Learning
  • Knowledge of child and adolescent development
  • Knowledge of subject areas, curriculum, and standards-based education
  • Knowledge of special education as applied to the needs of the students assigned to the teacher's particular area/classroom
  • Knowledge of the general organization and functions of a public school system
  • Ability to communicate effectively and resolve conflict with all stakeholders
  • Good organizational skills
  • Demonstrates accomplishments in keeping professionally current
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to perform responsibilities without the necessity of close supervision
  • Must be proficient in the use of computers and common software applications

Salary, Benefits, and Terms 

  • Salary range from $40,000-$45,000
  • Benefits include paid time off, insurance, enrollment priority for employee's dependents, retirement
  • Reports directly to the Principal
  • Must pass background check
  • FLSA Status: Exempt
