Effective Date: April 2024

Salary Range: $60,000.00 - $70,000.00 (DoQ)

This Job Description is established by the South Adams County Fire Protection District (“District”) to outline the basic requirements, duties, and general responsibilities of the Fleet Maintenance Technician I and is written to complement the District’s Policy Manual and Standard Operating Guidelines (SOGs).

**This position holds a probationary status of 12 months from date of hire**

Position Summary:

The Fleet Technician assists the Chief Mechanic in the repair and maintenance of automotive and mechanical firefighting apparatus and equipment. This assistance includes, but is not limited to, the preparation of service reports, replacement of vehicle fluids and light automotive service functions.

Immediate Supervisor:

The Fleet Technician reports directly to the Chief Mechanic.

Supervisory Responsibility:

None.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties are an overview of the primary duties and responsibilities of the Fleet Technician and should not be considered an all-inclusive list.

1. Knowledge of the District's rules, polices, and procedures that pertain to the Maintenance Division specifically and the District generally, including but not limited to the rules, policies, and procedures contained in the District's Policy Manual, and Standard Operating Guidelines.

2. Perform vehicle maintenance and repairs to ensure vehicles are safe for our internal and external customers.

3. Perform visual inspection of belts, hoses, and other under hood compartment components, document unusual conditions. Assist with performing pressure and leak checks.

4. Assist with preventative maintenance (PMs), safety inspections and annual maintenance inspections.

5. Assist in accurately diagnosing and performing mechanical repairs including the repair of brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, transmission clutches and other repairs under direct supervision.

6. Maintain detailed records on emergency response vehicles in an automated system to include all maintenance and repair records, cost of service, hours of service, accident reports and safety checklist.

7. Ability to respond to after-hours, emergency call outs. All Fleet Technicians are required to rotate “on-call” status for a week at a time as established by the Chief Mechanic. Call outs pertain to all District and contracted vehicles. (Refer to appropriate SOG for details)

8. Ensure work orders are completed properly and accurately. Maintain records of all maintenance work completed, including parts and supplies used.

9. Evaluate completed work prior to release and seek supervisor approval when appropriate and/or required.

10. Notify supervisor of potentially dangerous equipment and develop a corrective action for immediate resolution.

11. Ability to safely move vehicles between jobs and work area.

12. Assist with road calls and emergency services as necessary.

13. Must be safety-oriented and exhibit safe work habits.

14. Assist with performing and maintaining records for NFPA fire equipment tests and apparatus testing.

15. Perform oil changes, preventive maintenance, and safety checks on emergency response vehicles and fleet vehicles.

16. Drive fleet vehicles to diagnose drivability concerns, test after repair, and deliver and pick up from third party vendors, when applicable.

17. Assist Fleet Maintenance personnel with maintenance and repair of District vehicles.

18. Attend meetings as well as local and out of state training and conferences as required.

19. Perform all duties in a safe manner using all required safety devices and equipment.

20. Monitor and maintain a clean and safe shop and work area.

21. Diagnose and solve maintenance workflow problems.

22. Develop and maintain positive, effective working relationships with District employees, volunteers, reserves, vendors, residents, other governmental entities, and the community.

23. Maintain positive and constructive written and oral communication skills at all times.

24. Work well in a progressive, team-oriented environment and the ability to work independently.

25. Provide excellent service to the community.

26. Have a positive attitude and be a self-starter.

27. Promote a positive, professional image of the District at all times.

28. Perform other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Minimum Qualifications and Certification Requirements:

1. Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.

2. Minimum of 2 years documented work experience in vehicle and equipment repair and construction methods.

3. Possess and maintain (without interruption) a valid driver's license, and acceptable driving record. If an out of state licensure exists, then a Colorado Drivers License is required to be obtained within the first 90 days of employment.

4. Must possess personal hand tool(s) and appropriate mechanic’s tool set sufficient to perform the required duties.

5. Ability to use and care for most hand tools and routine power tools.

6. Knowledge of street names and locations within the District's service area within the first 90 days of employment.

7. Ability to read and comprehend written instructions, correspondence, and memos.

8. Ability to write correspondence.

9. Knowledge of basic computer programs and an adequate level of computer skills.

10. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language at a level adequate to perform the duties of the position.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

1. Moderate physical activity will be required frequently.

2. Work will be required in all weather conditions.

3. Required work may include some evening and weekend assignments.

4. Work may be performed under dangerous, hazardous, and adverse conditions, including, but not limited to, weakened structures, slippery and uneven surfaces, proximity to moving mechanical equipment, burning structures, broken glass or other materials, electrical currents, high places, and confined spaces.

5. Use of sensory activities such as talking, seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling (identifying objects by touch), depth perception and color vision will be required frequently.

6. Work will involve periods of high noise, high physical, mental and/or emotional stress.

7. Work may result in exposure to IDLH (immediately dangerous to life or health) environmental agents, including, but not limited to, hazardous materials, gases, chemicals, fumes, odors, mists, and dusts, some of which may require use of PPE (Personal Protection Equipment).

8. Have ability to lift, move and carry items up to 60 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally.

9. Have ability to stand, walk, sit, kneel, stoop, bend, lift, squat, push, pull, pinch, grip, spray, reach overhead, reach away from body, and perform repetitive motion. Be able to talk, see in color, hear, smell, feel (identify objects by touch), and perceive depth.
