Job Description

The Substance Use Disorder Counselor (SUDC) position at NAT-SU Healthcare is a full-time position focused on providing holistic and evidence-based mental health and substance use disorder psychotherapy services for clients in their respective NAT-SU treatment program.

Job Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct biopsychosocial mental health and substance use disorder assessments consisting of a face-to-face interview and the use of ASAM and other diagnostic instruments.
  • Develop and update client treatment plans consistent with the biopsychosocial assessment and the Medicine Wheel model of wellness.
  • Be familiar with or obtain (NAT-SU paid) training in White Bison’s “Wellbriety” 12-step and other curricula and utilize them in facility services.
  • Utilize evidence-based practices (EBPs) for SUD treatment and co-occurring disorders.
  • Conduct individual and group therapy sessions, both in-person and via telehealth (Zoom, etc.).
  • Attend and participate fully in weekly staff meetings.
  • Actively seek opportunities to increase therapeutic expertise through continuing education.

Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in mental health field from an accredited college or university
  • Hold or qualify for an LMFT, LCSW, CMHC, Psychologist or pre-licensed equivalent with no current restrictions. Licensure may be from any U.S. state at time of hire. Utah licensure should be obtained within one year of hire; NAT-SU will reimburse any fees associated with obtaining a Utah license to practice.
  • Minimum of two (2) years working with substance abuse and/or dual diagnosis preferred, however, equivalent training will be provided for the right candidate.

Key Skills and Competencies

  • Familiarity with the science and practice of Medication Assisted Therapy (MAT)
  • Expertise in the use of Trauma-Informed and trauma-specific treatment practices (EMDR, Exposure therapy, TF-CBT) AND/OR willingness to obtain training.
  • Strong ability to build connections, rapport with clients and co-workers; dedication to working as a team.
  • Native American background and/or cultural familiarity, and a willingness to learn and use traditional Native healing practices as part of the client’s overall treatment plan.
  • Strong personal boundary skills, both as a model for clients and to maintain personal self-care.

Physical Requirements

To comply with the Rehabilitation Act of 1973’s essential physical, mental, and environmental requirements, employees must be able to successfully perform all functions of their job with minimal supervision.

Work Hours

The Substance Abuse Counselor is a full-time, hourly position with a standard M-F 9am-5pm schedule, with occasional weekend and on-call work. Alternative schedules may be negotiated with supervisor.
