Urban Juncture Foundation is Hiring a Bronzeville Community Garden Lead Gardener Near Chicago, IL

The Lead Gardener role is essential to the Bronzeville Community Garden’s purpose of creating a safe and beautiful space for our neighbors to connect and have free access to fresh produce. You should have experience with all aspects of crop production and flower planting, ensuring that the garden is well- maintained at all times. As the garden’s primary steward you will directly and indirectly engage with our neighbors, inspiring, encouraging and empowering their full use of the garden - participating in events and programs, learning how to care for the garden, “shopping” for their produce, and ultimately taking ownership of the garden as community space. You will lead garden programming from ideation to execution, manage volunteers, host garden tours and hands-on activities, and perform community outreach for public events.

Description

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
Gardening
  • Direct the garden effort to create a vibrant and attractive urban scape. This includes designing and executing a crop production and stewardship plan, managing garden furniture, regular watering and weeding, keeping the garden clean, and creating an environment where neighbors become members and owners of the garden.
  • Order/Purchase seeds and other garden supplies and essentials as necessary.
  • Manage inventory and distribution of gardening supplies – seeds, plant starts, gloves, tools, educational materials, etc.

Community Engagement
  • Coordinate ongoing activities, learning opportunities and develop unique programming (e.g., garden volunteer days, garden education sessions, cooking demos, etc.) that attract and engage
  • neighborhood residents and visitors and connect them to other community activities and Build Bronzeville initiatives.
  • Serve as lead facilitator during garden volunteer days and activities.
  • Maintain and further the positive relationship with Parkview Towers Apartments management and residents.
  • Welcome and develop strong relationships with neighbors who want to “adopt” their own flowerbed(s), host their own activities, or simply relax and socialize. Find creative ways to pique curiosity about the garden and follow-up with opportunities for neighbors to engage more.
  • Host informal and regularly scheduled garden tours with neighbors, volunteer groups, potential and current funders, visitors on Build Bronzeville site tours and others.

General Administration
  • Collect and track relevant data, such as volunteer contact information, event participation, garden inquiries, etc.;
  • Prepare garden and event supplies orders;
  • Submit timely receipts for work-related purchases.

Strong Candidates Will Have:
  • Demonstrated experience with gardening, specifically planting produce and flowers;
  • A passion for gardening and community development;
  • Ability to work early mornings and some evening and weekend hours for events (e.g., Boxville
  • Markets, Garden volunteer days and other events)
  • Excellent communication and follow-through skills;
  • Ability to self-start and work well independently and in collaboration with others;
  • Approachable and welcoming demeanor;
  • Ability to lift at least 25 pounds and work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Valid driver’s license
  • A familiarity with the Bronzeville community and a shared desire to see Bronzeville (and its residents) prosper!
The Bronzeville Community Garden Lead Gardener role is a seasonal (through October 31, 2024)l, part time 20 hours/week maximum, contract position. Schedule can be flexible around preferred gardening
hours, with a typical schedule Monday - Friday. You must have availability for some evening and
weekend events.
Compensation: $20-$23/hr based on experience
