Position Summary
This position performs advanced mechanical work, such as performing gas and diesel engine overhaul, repair, and servicing of District busses, vans, heavy and other maintenance equipment. Diagnose and determine engine and automotive systems problems and independently perform the maintenance and repair required. Implement preventive maintenance programs and perform related work as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This positon reflects an experienced diesel engine mechanic who is knowledgeable of all fleet systems (generalist) and capable of maintaining these systems.
Essential Functions
Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Performs comprehensive diagnosis and repair of diesel and gas engines, automotive electrical systems, power trains, and hydraulic systems.
  • Performs comprehensive diagnoses and repair of mechanical problems, by determining needed repairs, and completing repairs in a timely and efficient manner and conducts road tests of vehicles after repairs.
  • Ensures buses are in good repair and proper working order.
  • Performs tire mounting and repair as needed.
  • Performs all equipment, vehicle, and bus repairs and preventative maintenance (e.g., brake repair, oil changes, tire rotations, etc.).
  • Schedules, maintains, and records comprehensive maintenance and safety inspections for District vehicles.
  • Provides service and repairs for vehicle break downs or other unplanned/emergency repair situations.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical components and systems.
  • Repairs, replaces, and tests fuel injectors and pumps to specifications.
  • Inspects, installs, repairs, and modifies electrical, air and hydraulic systems and other specialized accessories to District vehicles and equipment.
  • Prepares estimates for vehicle labor, time, and cost of proposed projects.
  • Maintains written and computerized records of maintenance, repairs and servicing of District vehicles and equipment.
  • Completes all appropriate logs, forms, and paperwork as required.
  • Provides vehicle reports and detailed cost analysis and repair history.
  • Maintains computerized fleet software programs and records.
  • Maintains detailed knowledge of Oregon Department of Education rules governing school buses and maintenance.
  • Performs substitute bus driving duties.
  • Performs general cleaning of school bus and shop, including washing windows. Sweeping, mopping, picking up garbage, and organizing supplies and tools.
  • Assists other vehicle maintenance personnel as needed.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education/Experience
  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED); AND
  • Possession of a valid State of Oregon Driver's License.
  • Five (5) years of successful driving experience.
Certificates, Licenses, Registration & Other Requirements
  • ASE Certification in School Bus or Medium/Heavy Truck or commensurate experience.
  • Ability to obtain a valid First Aid/CPR card and pass SafeSchools training modules as assigned.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an Oregon Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with proper endorsements and possession of an Oregon Department of Education (ODE) School Bus Drivers Certificate and School Bus Inspectors Certificate.
  • Ability to successfully complete a physical examination, required DMV testing, required ODE classes, drug screening and physical strength testing.
Desired Qualifications
  • Completion of a licensed trade school with emphasis in vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Four (4) years qualifying experience related to repairing and maintaining vehicles or heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of Oregon Department of Transportation school bus inspection requirements.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (May be acquired through education, training, and/or experience.)
Knowledge of: District policies and procedures; modern office practices and procedures; letter writing, correct language usage; record keeping/filing systems; computer hardware and software programs and their usage; vehicle and bus maintenance procedures; applicable driving (school bus) laws and regulations; student behavioral management techniques; District policies and procedures; safety and first aid practices and procedures; tie down procedures of special equipment such as wheelchairs. Ability to: possess the physical ability to regularly attend work and fulfill the essential function of the position with or without reasonable accommodation ; operate any and all District buses and bus equipment; maintain a safe driving record with District or personal vehicles; drive safely under pressure of time constraints, student misbehavior, hazardous road conditions, and traffic demands, remain available for daily driving assignments; understand and apply District and school policies and procedures; maintain appropriate appearance and attire; maintain regular and acceptable attendance and punctuality, as set forth in Board policy; greet stakeholders; provide information pertaining to area and/or District/School policies, procedures and other pertinent information; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work and from diverse backgrounds; maintain records; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; utilize appropriate grammar and spelling when corresponding, make mathematical calculations accurately; follow oral and written instructions.
Work Direction, Lead & Supervisory Responsibilities:
No assigned permanent staff to supervise. May train and provide work directions, as directed by supervisor, to appropriate staff and volunteers.
Physical Effort:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and climb stairs. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
The employee must have the physical ability to carry or drag a 125 pound weight 30 feet in 30 seconds. Must meet physical requirements for a bus driver as outlined in ORS.581.053.0040.
Working Conditions:
Exposure to inclement weather and the hazards associated with vehicular travel are routine for this position. The Substitute School Bus Driver must be able to deal with physically, emotionally, and mentally handicapped students of varying ages in a stress-free, mature, and positive manner. Noise level is usually moderate, but occasionally high depending activities. The employee may be exposed to bodily fluids, bloodborne pathogens, sick and/or contagious students. The employee may be exposed to toxic chemicals.
