NACD (National Association of Corporate Directors) is Hiring a Regional Director Near Arlington, VA

SUMMARY
The Regional Director (RD) team supports more than 20 NACD chapters (including two national chapter entities) in 35 cities throughout the United States. Each RD is responsible for a portfolio of chapters, “entrenching” themselves in each chapter as appropriate and partnering with volunteer chapter board members and paid (often contracted) staff, working to achieve consistently high levels of performance by creating, sharing, and integrating leading practices and aligning the chapter with national strategic objectives. Though each chapter is its own 501(c)(3) organization, the chapters are governed by a charter agreement and associated operating policies.
In collaboration with the volunteer chapter leaders—who serve on a working chapter board—as well as staff at each chapter, the RD shares chapter best practices to strategically support the chapters’ strengths, while helping to heighten performance in areas where improvement can and should be made, including program attendance and quality, event content/planning/processes, sponsor relationships, innovative member engagement, and critical collaboration with our national organization and strategy. The RD helps chapters deliver exceptional and increasing value to members to meet quantitative (e.g., number of programs, number of attendees) and qualitative (e.g., quality of programs, sharing of thought leadership, breadth and quality of speakers, peer-to-peer connections) engagement goals—guided by the current Chapter Success Roadmap—which, in turn, feed national goals in membership retention and growth, and in support of NACD Directorship Certification®. They may also be involved with chapter board leaders to augment chapter board and staff development, engagement, strategic planning, succession planning, committee structure, director onboarding and off-boarding, and hiring/training/onboarding of chapter staff.
The RD does not solely work with his/her respective portfolio chapters. The RD also serves as part of a strong national Chapter Network Team and an active chapter network, collaborating with a variety of staff at the national level and chapter ad-hoc working groups. They are strategically placed across the chapter network on initiatives as needed while contributing to resources and thought leadership on the team, as well as across NACD’s initiatives and growth efforts outlined in the NACD strategy.
NACD chapters continually evolve as their board composition and leadership change and as NACD national priorities shift to meet the changing demands of oversight in the governance ecosystem. The RD is responsible for ensuring that NACD chapters can meet the demands and navigate these changes successfully.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Carries forward the work accomplished by the former RD in the region (if applicable), with mindfulness of each chapter’s strengths and weaknesses and market factors, particularly as relevant to the Chapter Success Roadmap (CSR), partnering with the chapter leadership and staff in giving attention to identified weaknesses and continuing to strategically improve the chapter’s overall performance and collaboration with NACD National.
  • Builds strong relationships with full chapter leadership, and close relationships with chapter officers and staff to enhance alignment with the national organization. Serves as an NACD ambassador in a variety of ways, including hosting chapter leaders at the annual NACD Directors Summit™ and annual chapter staff retreat, arranging and leading chapter onboarding sessions, and attending chapter board and strategic meetings when possible and appropriate to provide the chapter network and national office’s perspective and offerings. Serves as the primary connector to the national organization and as the primary contact for national teams desiring to collaborate with the chapters.

  • Helps chapter board to establish and maintain exemplary governance, supporting onboarding, off-boarding, and recruitment of new chapter board members as needed. Is instrumental in steering cross-chapter collaboration among chapter leaders and committees. Provides sample governance resources to support these efforts.
  • Assists where needed to aid in selecting, contracting, and training chapter staff, supporting the transition of chapter administrative and executive personnel with support from the full Chapter Network Team. RDs often assist in annual performance evaluations of chapter staff as requested by chapter boards.
  • Hosts and attends regular national and regional chapter staff meetings to support cross-chapter connectivity and collaboration, while supporting the delivery of an exceptional member experience.
  • Serves as primary liaison between the chapter and national, with the support of the senior director, in addressing matters related to organizational change, digital transformation, and effectiveness of digital capabilities and allocation resources for chapters to drive increased value to members.
  • Assists the chapters as needed in developing world-class programming, including identifying, securing, and prepping speakers where warranted. Partners with national marketing team to provide promotional support and toolkits for programming and national social media exposure when appropriate.
  • Supports the development of intellectual capital by making contributions in a variety of ways to potentially include identifying subject-matter experts, securing and authoring blogs based on chapter programming, and/or serving as a moderator and as a facilitator for program and networking support, both in the chapter network and nationally, as needed.
  • Contributes to innovative ideas that advance the chapter network and deliver on the NACD mission.

  • Contributes to the Chapter Network Team’s development of strategic tools for chapter support and alignment.
  • Helps as warranted in leadership and facilitation of large-scale virtual meetings, in-person meetings, and widely distributed communications to hundreds of chapter leaders.
  • Contributes to annual budgeting process for the RD Team.
  • Has ability to self-sufficiently manage schedules, meetings, and priorities while navigating remote work and regular travel to chapters and national headquarters and events.
  • Performs other duties as warranted for chapter success and exceptional member experiences.
