Research Scientist/Grantwriter (Assistant Scientist Level)

Department: Executive

Reports To: Executive Director – Meros Center

Status: Full, Exempt

Effective Date: July 2024

The Research Scientist/Grantwriter role is responsible for leading grant-funded faith-based research projects including federal and private foundation grants, identifying and applying for grant funding for the Meros Center and other partners, and with support from the Executive Director setting annual goals and objectives contributing to efforts to expand research capacity while ensuring the Great Commission remains the priority. Research - 75%; Grantwriting consultation/mentorship- 25%.

Meros Description

The Meros Center is a joint venture between Kingdom Workers and Wisconsin Lutheran College. We exist to proclaim the full ministry of Jesus through faith-based community health research and innovation. We are a research and training center for Christian health ministry organizations, researchers, and students. The Meros Center promises to be a community where relationships and research work together to create gospel-centered strategies that reflect the ministry of Jesus. We believe we all have a part to play in showing God’s love and each of us has been given gifts and abilities to act as the body of Christ in this world. The Meros Center provides access to relevant research, evaluation tools, training, and connections that are often difficult to find. Health ministry initiatives are empowered to innovate and improve outcomes while increasing credibility in the broader health community. Researchers, church leaders, and organization leaders receive training to implement and evaluate gospel-centered community health strategies both locally and globally. In this vibrant hub of networking and discovery, believers work together to holistically transform communities. The Meros Center values differences in learning, abundance thinking, curiosity, hope-filled dignity, and transparency.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute a fully funded research program with external grants focusing on the intersection of faith and health (75% effort allocated for research)
  • Identify and apply for external grant funding for the Meros Center to support emerging research initiatives
  • Contribute to broader research efforts within the Meros Center, including study design, analysis, publications, and reviewer activities
  • Serve as a consultant and advisor for partner organizations to apply for and manage external grant funding
  • Develop and teach research and grant writing courses developed by the Meros Center (no more than 10-15% effort or one 8-week course per semester as needed)
  • Publish relevant faith-based research results in peer-reviewed, academic journals
  • Foster a Christ-centered culture for the Meros Center organization
  • Advocate and pray for communities living in poverty and spiritually separated from God
  • Actively uphold and maintain the Center’s mission, vision, and values in all areas of service and work including formal and informal meetings/gatherings
  • Promote and present the Meros Center at conferences, written media pieces, published materials, and speaking engagements

    Education, Experience and Characteristics:

    Required

    • Doctoral research degree in public health, global health, epidemiology, research methods, health policy, nursing, or equivalent
    • Record of peer-reviewed publications and professional presentations aligned with career stage
    • Experience with each step of the research process from start (study design) to finish (publication and dissemination)
    • Successful receipt and management of external research grant funding
    • Statistical analysis skills
    • Experience working with faith-based community organizations
    • Proven ability to build professional relationships and work collaboratively with others
    • A true passion for reaching and serving the lost, a commitment to discipleship of interns and partners, good stewardship, and creating a work environment that fosters open and honest two-way communication
    • Excellent writing skills

    Preferred

    • Experience working cross-culturally and internationally
    • Ability to work well under pressure, and reliably meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
    • Demonstrated attention to detail and strong organizational skills
    • Skilled at teambuilding
    • Strong interpersonal skills; analytical and strategic planning abilities; and experience in deploying human and financial resources towards key mission goals

      Location and Travel Expectations:

      • Position is based in Milwaukee, WI at Wisconsin Lutheran College
      • Position can be remote as approved by management
      • Ability to travel occasionally
      • Ability to travel by road, air or other means as may be encountered in a developing country
      • Ability to happily spend time and work in remote areas
      • Valid passport, or ability to obtain one, required
      • Valid driver’s license required

        Other Conditions:

        • Frequently required to walk, sit, stand, and/or lift up to 30 pounds
        • Frequently required to utilize hand and finger dexterity
        • Continually required to talk and hear
        • Occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions including outdoor exposure
        • Occasional exposure to bloodborne and airborne pathogens or infectious materials

          About Fundraising:

          The Meros Center believes everyone has a calling to ministry, personally and/or professionally. With this, we require all staff to complete 30 one-on-one meetings with individuals in their personal or professional network each year. We believe this helps staff members grow in understanding of their calling, expand support systems as they carry out their work, and introduce others to the Meros Center who may not otherwise know about us.
