Job Summary & Examination Date

The job of Substitute (Sub) Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) is for the purpose of providing a variety of health services to assigned students including first aid and emergency care. Sub LVNs perform specialized physical health care procedures and other procedures within scope of practice, for students receiving general education and special education services. Under the direction of a District Nurse, Sub LNVs may provide assistance with: health care referrals, mandated health screenings, immunization compliance and record-keeping services.
Sub LVNs work at a variety of school sites across the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District in both elementary and middle school settings.
Sub LVNs work a 7.0 hour day, generally between the hours of 7:30 AM- 3:30 PM depending on the start and end time of the specific site. Sub

ALL OFFERS OF EMPLOYMENT ARE CONTINGENT ON PRE-EMPLOYMENT CLEARANCES FOR:Department of Justice (CA) Fingerprints;Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Fingerprints;
Tuberculosis (TB). NOTE: The District pays for Pre-Employment clearances for Substitute Employees.
Examples of Duties

1. Administers immediate first aid and CPR as necessary.Administers prescribed medications according to physician instructions and established District procedures as directed;
2. Monitors student side effects and notifies appropriate personnel and agencies as required.
3. Assists in monitoring students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments such as lunch, bus stops, playground,field trips, assemblies, cafeteria, classroom, bus transport.
4. Assists students with personal hygiene and daily self-help skills; eating; mobility assistance and use of adaptive equipment; toilet students, change diapers and soiled clothing as assigned by the position.
5. Communicates with supervising instructional staff and professional support personnel regarding student condition and care.
6. Follows health care plans for children with health issues to meet the health needs of students with chronic health problems and accommodation requirements.
7. Maintains records of activities related to the health needs of students with chronic health problems and/or accommodation requirements.
8. Maintains health logs, medications, and other records and files related to assigned activities;
9. Maintains a variety of logs and files, including attendance, student records, charts and other related information.
10. Performs specialized physical health care procedures for students with health needs in compliance with medical orders and under the training and direction of the District Nurse.
11. Provides a variety of health services to assigned students; examines students for illness, injury and medical emergency;
12. Reports incidents, students with contagious diseases, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc for the purpose of maintaining student personal safety.
13. Screens student complaints to report medical conditions; responds to students with seizures or other medical conditions needing monitoring, specialized response protocols or instructed interventions for their participation in the school day.
Minimum Qualifications

Valid California Licensed Vocational Nurse certificate issued by the California State Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners.
Valid First Aid and CPR certifications issued by an authorized agency.
Valid California Class C Driver's License and evidence of insurability.
Experience with suctioning trachea, gastrostomy-tubes, ventilators, stoma care, and working with individuals with severe medically fragileneeds is desirable.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:
1. Health office and related medical practices, terminology, procedures and equipment.
2. General licensed vocational nursing skills, practices and procedures.
3. General identification, treatment and resolution of health problems.
4. General diagnostic methods for illnesses, injuries and medical emergencies.
5. Applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures including HIPPA.
6. Safe medication administration and side effects.
7. Suspected child abuse or neglect reporting procedures.
8. Medical procedures associated with special health care needs.
9. Operate a variety of specialized medical equipment.
9. Health and safety regulations. First aid and CPR methods and procedures. Clean and sterile treatment techniques.
10. Record-keeping and report writing techniques.
11. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
12.Operation of a variety of office equipment, a computer and assigned software.
Ability to:
1. Bend at the waist; kneel or crouch to assist student.
2. Reach overhead; above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve supplies.
3. Sit or stand for extended periods of time.
4. Read a variety of materials and screen student health conditions.
5. Push or pull students in wheelchairs.
6. Lift, carry, reposition students that need assistance.
