Job Summary

The Fiber Splicer is responsible for the installation of new cable lines, both underground and on utility poles, and performs maintenance on existing cables, including evaluation tests and repair.

  • Strong knowledge of MS Office software including Excel, Word and PowerPoint with the technical aptitude to learn additional databases

Tasks Required by a Fiber Splicer:

  • Utilize Fusion Splicer to splice Loose Tube & Ribbon fiber cable.

  • Prep/Splice single-mode (SM) and multi-mode (MM) optical fiber cables

  • Troubleshooting of fiber utilizing an OTDR.

  • Strong communication skills required between splicer and tech ops manager so that problems can be addressed as soon as possible.

  • Proper record keeping and be able to review cable records as necessary.

  • Knowledge, understanding and practice of safety regulations within OSHA, NESC, and NEC, and other construction related guidelines.

  • Maintain equipment and vehicle to a high standard.

  • Work indoors and outdoors as needed.

  • Be able to iterate to the project/construction managers detailed accounts of field activity, both verbal and written.

  • Coordinate with tech ops managers to verify and perform work as directed.

  • Night work as needed for things like node splits.

  • Able to be on call for emergencies involving damaged cable.

  • Must know ribbon fiber.

  • Must know fiber to the home.

Knowledge required by a Fiber Splicer:

  • Telecommunications— Knowledge of transmission and CATV telecommunications systems.

  • Public Safety— Knowledge of keeping work area safe to the public.

  • Computers and Electronics— Knowledge of electronic equipment and computer hardware/software for keeping proper records.

  • Mechanical— Knowledge of optical splicing equipment like a cleaver, splicer and bucket truck
