The Assistant Teacher will assist the Lead Teacher in implementing curriculum and activities that are age appropriate, culturally sensitive, and support development tasks. This position will assist the teacher and children as they engage in daily activities. This Assistant Teacher will be expected to be flexible and be able to work on a variety of tasks throughout the day. This Assistant Teacher must be able to work in a team environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide positive, nurturing support to all children in a therapeutic child care program for homeless children. Includes grouping of different age groups when needed
• Under the guidance of the Hands of Hope Director and the Lead Teacher, provide assistance in implementing curriculum and activities that are age-appropriate, culturally sensitive, and support developmental tasks
• Assist with keeping the room and playground safe for our children at all times. This may include cleaning and sanitizing equipment
• Participate in team meetings on a regular basis, giving feedback about children’s progress and concerns to Lead Teacher
• Assist volunteers while in the classrooms with them
• Assist with coordinating daily activities in the room
• Assist in providing for the basic needs of the children
• Assist with diaper changing and potty training
• Assist with food service
• Actively support Grace Centers of Hope’s and Hands of Hope’s mission and commitment to diversity in all areas and responsibilities
• Assist in upholding the policies and practices of Hands of Hope Childcare Center in accordance with State of Michigan Licensing

Qualifications:

• Assistant Teacher CANNOT have any convictions involving harm or threatened harm to an individual within the 10 years immediately preceding the date of hire
• Assistant Teacher DHS report will show that he/she has not been named in a Central Registry case as the perpetrator of child abuse or child neglect before having contact with a child at Hands of Hope
• Must have a current infant, child, adult CPR and First Aid certificate (or be working toward this within the first 90 days of employment)
• Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with staff, parents, children, and volunteers
• Knowledge of play, reading, and quiet-time activities for children
• Child supervision skills
• Ability to provide a supportive and caring environment for children
• Ability to provide basic nutrition and hygiene services for infants and young children
• Sensitivity and commitment to working with homeless, low income, at risk, and minority families a must
• Ability to speak and write in a clear, concise and effective manner
• Ability to work in a team environment, to put personal preferences aside for the good of the team and the clients
• Ability to multitask
• Physical work is a primary part of job. Ability to lift 40lbs is a must, and ability to get on the floor with the children is required
