Job Description

Job Title: Golf Course Maintenance Technician
Reports To: Golf Course Maintenance Manager
FLSA Status: Full-time Non-Exempt (Hourly)
Starting Wage: $16.32 – 19.58 per hour, DOQ
PURPOSE
To assist Golf Course Manager(s) with day-to-day maintenance operations at all three Forest
Preserve Golf Courses. Typical Spring through Fall hours are approximately 6:00 a.m.- 2:30 p.m.
weekdays. Typical Winter hours are 7:00 – 3:30 weekdays. Weekends and holiday work require
alternating and various hours with occasional overtime work.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provide supervision and assist Golf Course Managers with scheduling and providing direction
to seasonal staff on a daily basis.
  • Perform general golf course turf maintenance, including mowing, trimming, edging, cup
cutting, watering, mulching, sign and bench maintenance and bunker maintenance.
  • Applies fertilizer, pesticides and plant protectants as directed.
  • Identify, diagnose and repair irrigation systems under the direction of Golf Course Managers.
  • Assist with general pump station maintenance and satellite diagnostic and repair.
  • Assists golf mechanics with performing preventative and annual maintenance and repairs on
grounds equipment.
  • Assists with basic facility repairs, painting, and miscellaneous general construction projects.
  • Loads, unloads and transports materials and supplies.
  • Organize & clean maintenance shop buildings, break areas, restrooms, and storage areas.
  • Pick up and deliver parts, supplies, or aggregate as needed for golf course operations and
other District needs.
  • Plow snow and spread salt and/or sand as needed.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of and adhere to all risk management and safety programs and
procedures. Completes all safety training and assists with training of seasonal staff.
  • Complete all other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED FOR THE ROLE
Must have a general knowledge of golf course maintenance operations; able to operate equipment
and provide general maintenance that is used in golf course operation, including trucks, tractors, skid
loaders, sprayers, and mowing equipment in a safe and skillful manner. Must be able to prepare and
apply plant protectants, pesticides and fertilizers utilizing proper equipment in a safe manner. Must
have basic knowledge of general building maintenance and repair. Must be able to understand and
demonstrate sound safety practices and have good written and verbal communication skills.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; Two-year degree in turf
management or related field preferred; (3) years of experience in golf course maintenance work is
preferred; or any combination of training and experience. A valid Illinois driver’s license is required.
An Illinois Public Pesticide Applicator’s License is required or able to be obtained within 90 days of
hire.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions,
and procedure manuals. Ability to fill out routine reports and write down instructions. Ability to speak
clearly and effectively to customers or employees of the Forest Preserve District. Ability to hear and
understand verbal instructions.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to read a tape measure and calculate figures and amounts such as fractions, decimals,
proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume, applying basic mathematical concepts.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense with the understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written,
oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in
standardized situations.
MACHINES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT
Must be able to operate mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, sprayers, pickup trucks, small dump trucks,
trailers, as well as typically associated maintenance tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, hammers,
pliers, sockets, pneumatic tools, floor and bottle jacks, drills, grinders, circular saws, pressure gauges,
chain saws and various other hand tools; Ability to learn basic use of skid loader within first 12
months.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to
finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee
is frequently required to walk, sit, climb or balance, talk or hear, and taste or smell. The employee
must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision,
peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee

of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibrations. The
employee is occasionally exposed to the risk of shock, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic

medium loud.
