Darrow School is Hiring a Custodian Near New Lebanon, NY

Position-Specific Responsibilities

As a Custodian, you will perform routine custodial and maintenance tasks to ensure a clean working and living environment for students, staff, and visitors, ensuring all areas are clean and safe. Hours of work are 11:00 AM to 7:30 PM.

Technical responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Making beds, sweeping, climbing stairs on a regular basis, cleaning windows and furniture, light furniture moving, project floor maintenance, and other cleaning duties associated with general custodial work
  • Assisting with manual snow removal from walkways and steps
  • Performing interior and exterior maintenance including prepping and painting, light carpentry projects, preventative maintenance, and other tasks as specified
  • Working efficiently with a variety of custodial equipment and materials, including but not limited to backpack vacuums, canister vacuums, buffers, and cleaners
  • Maintaining common areas and walkways (indoors and outdoors)
  • Removing recycling
  • Assisting with set-up for a variety of activities (concerts, weddings, weekend events)
  • Knowledge of and assisting with the maintenance of the Living Machine and its operation

Non-technical responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Training other staff to develop their skills
  • Communicating operative needs to Director of Facilities
  • Tracking and fulfilling work orders
  • Keeping written records as required
  • Maintaining supplies and requesting supplies as needed

Additional Requirements:

  • Proficiency in the following custodial and maintenance tasks: mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms, vacuuming (using a backpack vacuum and carpet vacuum), and dusting
  • Ability to utilize various products safely and as instructed
  • Ability to work on a six-foot ladder
  • Ability and willingness to assist in emergencies
  • Ability to participate in snow/ice removal, event set-up
  • Willingness to attend meetings and training
  • Ability and willingness to perform work outside of normal hours or work overtime if required
  • Other duties as assigned

Use of Own Vehicle:

You will be required to occasionally use your own vehicle to drive around campus and/or make short trips to town to pick up supplies. To offset mileage and wear and tear on your vehicle, you will be paid an annual flat rate distributed over a twelve-month period on a bi-weekly basis in addition to your hourly rate.

Required Skills / Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with cleaning products
  • Ability to work with others in a team environment and or perform work independently
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with various members of the community, including faculty, administrators, trustees, parents, and students
  • Valid driver’s license
  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • The employee is required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to find, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms
  • Must be able to bend, reach, stoop, stand and/or walk for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to climb ladders
  • Must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds safely and consistently; may need to lift and carry objects greater than 50 pounds
  • Must be able to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions including heat, cold, sun, rain, snow, and humidity
  • Must be able to work in environments with adverse conditions including dirt, dust, and pollen, odors, dampness, and noise
  • The position requires an extensive amount of walking around campus and through buildings, climbing stairs, and driving
