The mission of Bread for the City is to help Washington, DC residents living with low income to develop the power to determine the future of their own communities. We provide food, clothing, medical care, and legal and social services to reduce the burden of poverty. We seek justice through community organizing and public advocacy. Position Description:

The Dental Hygienist is a DC licensed dental provider skilled in caring for patients with compassion, respect and dignity. Under direct or indirect supervision of the dentist, the hygienist will partner with patients in the optimization of oral health as it relates to the patients' overall health and well-being. The hygienist will work with a team of primary care providers and support staff out of our NW and SE Center to educate patients on the importance of oral health practices needed to achieve positive health outcomes. This position is part-time optional.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Maintains safe infection control practices, properly disposes of waste, operates sterilization and maintains knowledge of materials and machine maintenance;
  • Perform oral prophylaxis as a part of comprehensive patient care; including but not limited to prophies, scaling, root planning, fluoride treatment and sealant placement;
  • Maintain electronic health record, update medical history and take radiographs;
  • Conduct a thorough health examination, periodontal charting and oral health screening to determine a periodontal diagnosis.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Work with health team to deliver oral hygiene through the lens of comprehensive health;
  • Ability to evaluate and give input in improving performance measures;
  • Work alongside volunteers and dental assistants in training.

Requirements:

  • Commitment to working with low-income residents of DC;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and an ability to work well with a wide variety of people;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Flexibility, optimism, and a cooperative spirit in the face of hectic working condition;
  • Efficient, hardworking, and punctual;
  • Collaboration among staff is essential and creative problem solving is strongly recommended;
  • Other languages preferred, but not required;
  • Dental hygiene certificate from an accredited school for dental hygiene;
  • Licensed in Washington, DC to practice dental hygiene services;
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with other staff and volunteers in a professional manner;
  • Familiarity with Google Organization & Productivity tools (Gmail, Google Docs, Calendar) and/or ability to learn new technology systems;
  • Willingness to learn and carry out Bread for the City's commitments to social justice and racial equity;
  • Must be fully vaccinated and boosted against Covid-19.
