This position manages the Department's New Employee Outreach and Training services and AFSCME’s Information Center.

Duties:

  • Oversees the selection and acquisition of library materials for representation data, including periodicals, online services, and subscriptions.
  • Manages the Information Center budget and negotiates contract renewals with vendors while ensuring copyright/licensing agreements are followed.
  • Supervise Information Center staff including reviewing the AFSCME FYI daily news clips and working with the Archivist at Wayne State University.
  • Supervise, train and mentor departmental staff including reviewing curriculum development for collective bargaining training and reviewing staff work product.
  • Manage current contracts, the contracts archive, magazines, proceedings, correspondence, and records databases.
  • Manage the New Employee Outreach program by working with other departments and affiliates to set up NEO trainings and workshops and assign staff to conduct those trainings.
  • Provides technical expertise to affiliates on creating NEO programs to ensure systems are in place to reach new members.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Education and Experience

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with course work in library science, labor relations or liberal arts. Master’s degree in library science preferred. And a minimum of ten (10) years relevant experience in labor and research, or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of labor unions and AFSCME.
  • Thorough knowledge of issues in public sector and publicly funded services.
  • Understanding of workplace issues and advocacy strategies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and execute strategic work plans and manage programs, personnel, and budget.
  • Ability to design and deliver trainings and presentations.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple activities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships, including networking with various advocacy and coalition groups.
  • Ability to analyze situations and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to organize work and supervise staff.

Travel & Work hours

  • Travel and extended work hours including weekends are required.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
