Job Description and Duties
The California Fish and Game Commission (Commission) is looking for a talented, enthusiastic and motivated Tribal Advisor and Liaison (TAL) to join a high-performing team in supporting and carrying out the mission of the Commission. The position offers unique opportunities and challenges in a collaborative environment where professional growth is encouraged. Based in the state capital of Sacramento, the Commission is family-friendly and situated in close proximity to Napa Valley, San Francisco, Lake Tahoe and other desirable destinations.
Under the general direction of the executive director, the TAL serves as a member of the Commission executive leadership team to advise and provide policy guidance to the Commission and its staff on fish and wildlife issues of interest to California Native American tribes and tribal communities (hereafter referred to as tribes). The TAL will strengthen tribal partnerships and support implementation of the Commission Tribal Consultation Policy, the foundation of Commission efforts to work cooperatively, communicate effectively, and consult with tribes. Through communication and consultation, the TAL will provide opportunities for input and engagement by California tribes regarding the development of Fish and Wildlife laws, regulations, and policies that may affect tribes. The work of this position requires strong leadership and initiative, community engagement skills, maintaining a network of key partners, and collaborating with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (Department) and other government agencies, community-based organizations, and advocacy groups. The TAL must have an interest in supporting the Commission's mission and vision, and be committed to advancing equity, diversity and inclusion through all efforts. Using project management skills and principles, the TAL is accountable for assessing needs, developing work plans, establishing and meeting delivery time frames, reporting successes, elevating challenges, and regularly discussing progress with management.
The TAL makes recommendations on a broad spectrum of the most difficult administrative and program-related matters and formulates policies, procedures and program alternatives. Hence, the TAL must have the ability to work independently and resolve issues with minimal supervision, while working in a team environment and maintaining close attention to detail. In all job functions, Commission employees are responsible for fostering an inclusive, safe and secure work environment that values diverse cultures, perspectives and experiences, and is free from discrimination. Commission employees are expected to provide all members of the public equitable services and treatment; collaborate with all communities including those who have traditionally been underrepresented in decision-making forums, government agencies, and tribal governments; and work toward improving outcomes for all Californians.
