Wide Angle Youth Media is Hiring a Full-Time Media Instructor [BSO-Instructor] Near Baltimore, MD

Description

Position Summary: Wide Angle Youth Media is hiring an outgoing and team-oriented Full Time Lead Media Instructor. During the academic year, the Lead Media Instructor will teach in the weekly middle school program, Baltimore Speaks Out, an after-school program for 5th-8th grade students in Baltimore City schools. In the summer, the Lead Media Instructor will teach in the MediaWorks summer intensive, a program for high school students and older youth (ages 14-21). In addition, there will be opportunities to teach in short-term Community Voices workshops.
This is a full-time, non-exempt, 40 hours per week, year-round position. Further information about Baltimore Speaks Out, MediaWorks and Community Voices are below. 

  • Baltimore Speaks Out is run in partnership with our partner schools and organizations during the school year. Throughout the academic year, students will meet to learn graphic design, photography, videography, audio recording, critical thinking, and leadership skills while engaging in their communities. 
  • MediaWorks runs typically July - August (planning begins in June). The FT Media Instructor facilitates and leads a MediaWorks cohort of track (1) beginner to intermediate youth ages 14-21 for the in-person five-week program.
  • Community Voices offers a wide range of fee-for-service workshops and media-arts centered professional development for educators. Youth-centered workshops focus on their education and skill attainment; adult educator workshops teach youth-serving professionals who want to utilize media arts to support their curricula creation and facilitation.

Curriculum Development and Lead Teaching

  • Curriculum Design & Implementation: Designing a robust media sampler curriculum with the support of the education manager and assistant instructor, to engage and excite youth through hands-on experiences with digital photography, digital photography workflow, editing, animation/short form video, video editing, audio recording, audio editing, illustration/graphic design, storytelling, and performance.
    • Curriculum includes trimester-long Middle School courses and short term Community Voice workshops
    • All curriculum must be designed to meet national standards for media arts education and STEM identified here.
  • Support Assistant instructor(s) in gaining teaching skills such as public speaking, student interventions, presentation of a unit of study, and classroom management through a co-teaching model.
  • Classroom management: Using CHAMPS framework (or similar proactive behavior strategy) to articulate student learning and behavior expectations throughout the class. 
  • Work with the Equipment Coordinator to reserve and prepare cameras, iPads, laptops, lighting, and other technology needs for class.
  • Transport (check out, transport to class, return) and oversee the use of equipment during class sessions.
  • Communicate with Parents/Guardians to celebrate student success and collaboratively address student needs.
  • Regular and consistent communication and updates with families /students about programming and class overall.
  • Substituting and supporting other instructors in the classroom when needed and reasonably notified. 
  • Team Facilitation: Facilitate check-ins with students to support the young people as they learn how to use media tools and produce media projects. 
  • Program Administration: Lead Media Instructor is responsible for securing all participants complete and submitted paperwork by deadlines.
  • Evaluation: Support evaluation of youth growth and progress with technical and career skills.
  • Project Documentation: Document behind the scenes pictures as well as capture youth quotes, success metrics (Pre and Post Growth Cards), and stories for the Wide Angle website.

Community Engagement and Outreach

  • The lead teacher will act as the initial point of contact, with support of the Education Manager, for BSO site coordinators at our respective schools and community centers.
  • In partnership with the Outreach Manager, participate in community engagement events such as tabling at Resource Fairs, distributing flyers, and school events to promote student work and recruit new students. 
  • Attend required program events, organize and lead family night and closing events for program sites, and support and engage students and families as needed about the upcoming class. 

MediaWorks Summer Program

  • In June, Collaborate with Program’s Dept colleagues in planning 5-week of Media curriculum for our MediaWorks summer program
  • Facilitate and lead your cohort of 15 students, ages 14-21, at Wide Angle’s office for 5 weeks (Mon-Thur) from early July to mid August and provide weekly take home assignments for students to complete on Friday’s remotely.
  • Provide accurate Daily Attendance records, and 1:1 check-ins with all students via email, text, phone and video conferencing
  • Guide and coach students through completion of independent study and client project deliverables
  • Attend and present at the MediaWorks Closing Ceremony at the culmination of the program

Organization Wide Responsibilities

  • Attend annual retreat planning and strategic planning as required.
  • Participate on a task force to support the organization as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Attend staff meetings, department meetings, and scheduled 1:1s with your direct supervisor.

General Human Resources Requirements:

  • Agree to and complete a fingerprinting background test that will be paid by Wide Angle Youth Media.
  • Attend Wide Angle Youth Media staff meetings on a weekly basis.
  • Monitor students and producers under the age of 18 at all times. Do not leave minors with a Guest Artist, Parent, Peer Mentor, or Volunteer as the only supervising adult at any time.
  • Prioritize Slack and Email for all communications. Slack must be checked at least once every 24 hours M-F All messages must be answered within 24hrs of receipt during the week or on the next day you are scheduled to work.
  • Provide Wide Angle with a phone number that is checked within 24 hours, and must reply to all calls and emails, unless otherwise stated

This full-time salaried position offers a starting wage between $42,385 to $52,385 annually, depending on education, artist portfolio, and years of professional experience.

Requirements

The following skills/traits are required for the position:

  • Advanced experience (3-5 years of experience) facilitating/teaching middle and/or high school school-aged youth, working with racially and ethnically diverse and/or low-income communities. 
  • Advanced experience (3-5 years of experience) with photography, image editing, and promotional materials, with fluency in Adobe Creative Cloud programs, hardware photography tools, and other photography software. 
  • Demonstrated awareness of how to address and navigate systemic power imbalances through curriculum and/or artistic practices.
  • Holds high expectations for each student and works to foster student achievement through building individual relationships
  • Enthusiasm and passion for mentoring others and making change in communities. Ability to communicate effectively with citizens, staff, parents, young people, volunteers, and community groups.
  • Familiarity with basic computer operations: email, word processing, spreadsheets, and basic graphics.
  • Experience with curricula development, coordinating printing and distribution, and evaluating project success.
