Florida Keys Electric is Hiring a Journeyman Substation Electrician Near Tavernier, FL

Department: Transmission

FT/PT Status: Full Time

JOB DESCRIPTION:

We have openings in our Tavernier and Marathon locations.

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Responsible for all assignments, directives, schedules, and programs as may be assigned.
  2. Perform all phases of substation construction on 138kv and below voltage equipment including but not limited to: reading and understanding schematic diagrams and construction drawings, construction of foundations, erecting structures, installation of busses, switches, breakers, transformers, voltage regulators, capacitors, circuit switchers, AC and DC secondary voltage systems, conduit and cable raceways, grounding systems, pulling and terminating of cable, installation of control metering and relay panels, etc.
  3. Perform all phases of substation maintenance on 138kv and below voltage equipment including but not limited to: adjustments of switches, sampling, testing, degasification, and filtering of oil. Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on the following: LTCs, breakers, regulators, transformers, and capacitor banks. Update substation logs and equipment records, maintenance of substation yard, fence, gates, signs, and security systems, troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and stored energy systems, read, and understand schematics and wiring diagrams, etc.
  4. Perform the following tests using manufacturer software (if applicable): contact resistance, insulation resistance (megger), complete set of power factor tests (doble), winding resistance, TTR, high potential (hi-pot), dielectric of oil, SF6 tests (moisture, SO2, purity), breaker timing, battery load, and impedance, infrared thermography (FLIR),
  5. Perform monthly inspections and gather all necessary data for the generation of reports and updating records. Make repairs and corrections on any abnormal findings.
  6. Perform switching and tagging on equipment at all voltages as directed by the system operator or supervisors in accordance with established FKEC practices.
  7. Operate the following equipment: digger derrick, mini excavator, skid steer, trencher, mini backhoe, bucket truck, automobiles, and forklift.
  8. Provide support to the Marathon Generation Plant as needed and the Marathon position will be based out of Marathon Generation Plant.
  9. Responsible for the performance of assigned work in accordance with FKEC's standards and procedures.
  10. Ensure safety rules and requirements are followed in accordance with the FKEC "Basic Life-Saving Rules" and acceptable utility standards.
  11. Must be familiar with and have the ability to use wiring diagrams and schematics as well as the applicable ANSI, IEEE, NESC, and OSHA standards, etc.

  2. Communications - Ensure all communications internally and externally are provided in a timely and professional manner. Must possess strong communications skills to effectively interact with all other FKEC departments.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Training and Experience: Must have completed an approved Substation Electrician Apprenticeship or equivalent. Must have a Florida Class A CDL (or transfer to Florida Class A CDL within 6 months). Must be FKEC or equivalent certified for working in or out of the bucket.
  • Tools: Electrician and mechanic hand tools, air, electric, and hydraulic power tools, chain saws, electrical test equipment, and all specialty tools provided by FKEC.
  • Must possess a valid Class A CDL with an endorsement for operating vehicles with air brakes. If Class A CDL is not issued by the state of Florida, must be able to transfer to the State of Florida.

Working Conditions:

  • Position requires medium lifting, awkward work positions, and exposure to many adverse elements of weather conditions.
  • Physical demands: the ability to climb, balance, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, feel, talk, hear, perform repetitive motions of wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Must be able to exert a force of 100 lbs occasionally.
  • Working environment: Substation and generating plant environment, subject to extreme heat, excessive noise levels, and vibration, exposure to mineral oil, lubricants, paint, cleaning agents, dust, compressed gases (nitrogen, oxygen, acetylene, SF6, and argon, dry air, etc.). Air-conditioned offices and control houses with access to phones and radiophones.

Location Requirements:

Worker for this position is not required to live within the FKEC service territory, but it is highly recommended.
