Title: Community Program Manager

This position supervises: Not a supervisory position


Purpose of Position:

The Community Programs Manager is responsible for building and growing programs that keep pets and their families together. This employee will require a passionate individual who believes that all families deserve to have pets and is committed to breaking down barriers that prevent caregivers from getting access to pet care and services they need. This employee will be responsible for creating, tracking, and improving programs that provide public assistance to community members and pets in need, including culturally and linguistically appropriate information, educational resources, and resource assistance. Under the direction of the Senior Director of Operations, this employee will lead the identification of the need for and the development and facilitation of community programs. This will be accomplished through developing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, creating program plans, and developing and managing budgets. This role will work with the NHS’s current community programs and services including, but not limited to, Pet Food Pantry (PFP), Forever Home Program (FHP), Animeals, Project Pet Safe, Helping Heroes, Vets Get Pets, and other pet retention services, as well as continuously exploring ways to expand and add services to support the pets and their caregivers in the community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, implementation, and management of various community centric pet retention programs for those who need it the most within NHS jurisdictions.
  • Ensure programs are developed and structured to deliver on planned outcomes and budgeted costs.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to sustain existing programs and create and manage new scalable community-based programs.
  • Assess communities to identify needs in high impact areas through collaboration with local social services organizations that may be of assistance to provide services and resources to persons/animals in need.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with various companies, community groups, pet friendly businesses, and other partners to create and support additional opportunities.
  • Act as a liaison within the community, identify and build partnerships and collaborative projects.
  • Build strong internal teams and deep relationships with community members to sustain and grow programs.
  • Participate in publicity and awareness for community programs in collaboration with the Marketing team.
  • Work with the Volunteer Manager and provide direction and support to community programs volunteers.
  • Coordinate community and internal events.
  • Manage all incoming donations for pet food pantry and other programs.
  • Establish and maintain key performance metrics that support effective decision making.
  • Evaluate programs and make data-driven improvements to current programs, expansion of existing programs, and creation of new programs to increase NHS’s impact in animal welfare.
  • Communicate and coordinate with colleagues to ensure the Managed Intake process is efficient and effective. Assist with cases that require resources to help keep the pet in the home by suggesting and offering referrals and coordinate a smooth transition of connecting the pet owner with the relevant resource(s).
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications: Education, Experience, Certification, and Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Education

Associate or bachelor’s degree in social work or related field is required. Sufficient experience in related field may be considered in lieu of degree.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required.
  • Experience with program management and working in community programs.
  • Prior animal shelter/rescue experience from prior work, internships, or volunteering.
  • Human Services related knowledge from prior work, internships, or volunteering.
  • Compassion for people and animals.
  • Effective oral communication skills including public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Effective written communication, grammar, spelling, and email writing.
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and attention to detail skills; ability to prioritize and meet deadlines with minimum supervision.
  • Experience working under pressure, as a team, and independent.
  • Willingness to work flexible days and hours, including evening shifts, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Previous success working collaboratively to deliver program objectives in a fast-paced, results-driven environment.
  • Ability to be adaptable and comfortable with change.
  • Highly proficient with computer skills including Microsoft Office, database software and project management tools such as Asana.
  • Experience with event planning and project management.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of individuals and organizations, including staff, volunteers, community leaders, general public, businesses, and media.
  • Familiarity with national animal welfare trends and industry developments desirable.
  • Demonstrate a positive team attitude and excellent work ethic.
  • Valid driver’s license and excellent driving record.

  • The noise level in the office environment is usually quiet, though barking or whining of animals may be escalated at certain times in certain areas of the building.
  • High exposure to animals whose reactions to the shelter environment cannot be predicted.
  • Temperatures in the shelter environment are varied, though usually moderate, and dependent on the season.
  • Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases and hazardous chemicals.
  • Ability to work around animals without severe allergic reactions.
  • As work may need to be done outside of the shelter, the employee may encounter environmental issues outside of our control. When this occurs, the employee must report the issues immediately to their direct supervisor who will work to resolution.
