District Department of Transportation is Hiring a Sign Painter Near Washington, DC

General Job Information
Job Summary

This position is located in the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), Field Operations Branch (FOB), and Field Operations Branch. The incumbent in this position will work as a member of a team engaged in fabricating various traffic control parking signs. Inspections of work are made by the sign shop foreman to assess appearance, accuracy, and adherence to established guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent receives work orders from the sign shop foreman; and reads, interprets, and reconciles conflicting information between the written request and the sign location attached to the work order. With the assistance of the sign shop foreman and established regulations and policies, the incumbent determines the appropriate substance material, color, sheeting material, and sign size and selects the size of letters, and determines spacing based on the message and sign size. The incumbent assures the finished fabricated sign is the same information shown on the shop order sketch.

The incumbent will apply the material to the substrate through the operation of vacuum applicators, heat roller applications, silkscreen, squeegee, and brushes. The incumbent will construct and prepare standard silk screens and messages for repetitive jobs. The incumbent will cut various standard Marker III computerized sign composers to create or retrieve standard traffic control and parking signs and transfer the same to the graphic printer or cutter. As necessary transports substrate material, paint, and/or sheeting to sign shop from inventory for use in fabrication. Cleans and maintains all sign fabrication equipment, tools, and work area at the end of the workday. As necessary, may assist in the installation of the sign fabricated.

Qualifications and Education

Knowledge of District of Columbia street system, principles of parking and traffic control signing, and guidelines found in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways;

Ability to use sign Marker III, vacuum applicators, roller applicators, screen table, letter machine, drills and saws;

Ability to cut and mount various standard size letters and numbers out of adhesive material;

Ability to interpret drawings, sketches and written instructions on work orders;

Ability to utilize basic mathematics and measuring needed for sign layout and letter spacing; and

Ability to utilize a mouse operated, menu driven software computer program.

Working Conditions/Environment

Most of the work is performed indoors in adequately lighted and heated shops, although some of the work is performed outdoors in good weather. Some outdoor projects may require work near moving vehicles and exposure to the possibility of falls. The incumbent may be subject to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and irritation of eyes and skin from exposure to fumes, solvents, or paints.

The work requires continual movement of hand and arm, standing, reaching, and bending, as well as lifting materials up to 10 pounds. Occasionally, some projects may require heavier effort in doing tasks such as erecting signs, kneeling, and climbing ladders. At such times, the incumbent may handle items up to 40 pounds.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is covered under collective bargaining union and subject to union dues through payroll deduction.

Emergency Designation: This position has been designated as an emergency employee position under the provisions of District Personnel Manual, Chapter 12. As such, your services may be required in emergency situations to perform crucial duties, i.e., snow removal, debris removal, transportation, shelter operation, food distribution, and communications. These duties may be performed when the government is closed or when most employees are dismissed early. Employees are required to work rotating shifts, to include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Employees are considered emergency personnel and are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

Position Designation: The incumbent of this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC Personnel Regulations, Suitability - Security Sensitive. Accordingly, the incumbent will be subject to pre-employment checks (criminal background checks, consumer credit check, traffic record checks, if applicable) as a condition of employment, and will be subject to periodic criminal background checks for the duration of your tenure.
