Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree from an accredited institution
  2. Hold or be eligible to hold the appropriate New Jersey Issued Certificate
  3. Adept at time management and planning
  4. Ability to work independently and collaboratively, handle multiple projects, and meet deadlines

Reports To: Director of Special Services

Job Goal: To assess, support, and enhance the educational experience of students with diverse learning needs

Job Description:

  1. Conduct comprehensive assessments to identify students' strengths and challenges, including the presence of any learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, or other barriers to learning.
  2. Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other stakeholders to develop personalized and legally mandated Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students with special needs.
  3. Manage and oversee implementation of student IEPs, including accommodations and modifications, student progress, related services, etc.
  4. Collaborate with teachers, administrators, support staff and other school personnel to implement effective strategies and interventions that address the diverse needs of students within the general education and special education environment.
  5. Collaborating with other professionals, such as general education teachers, special education teachers, speech therapists, and occupational therapists, to facilitate a multidisciplinary approach to student support. Regular communication and collaboration help create a cohesive team focused on meeting the diverse needs of students.
  6. Advocate for the rights and educational needs of students with disabilities, and providing ongoing support to ensure the successful implementation of IEPs.
  7. Stay informed about current research, best practices, and legislative updates in the field of special education to enhance the team's knowledge and skills.
  8. Involvement crisis intervention, providing immediate support and assistance in situations where a student's well-being or the school community's safety is at risk. This can include collaborating with external agencies, implementing safety plans, and offering emotional support to students and their families during challenging times.
  9. Collaborate with students, families, and relevant stakeholders to develop transition plans (elementary to middle school; middle school to high school; and high school to college/career/life) for students moving between grade levels or transitioning out of the school system.
  10. Develop and implement behavioral intervention plans for students by assessing the function of behaviors, identifying appropriate interventions, and monitoring progress to promote positive behavior and a conducive learning environment
  11. Provide professional development and/or workshops to school personnel and other stakeholders to support special education student development.
  12. Engage and educate parents/guardians about the educational process, the rights of students with disabilities, and resources available to support their child's learning. Providing ongoing communication and collaboration with parents to ensure a partnership in the child's educational journey.
  13. Serve as the anti-bullying specialist for the district.
  14. Ensure regular and reliable in-person job attendance and punctuality as noted by the district.
  15. Complete all mandated trainings in a timely manner.
  16. Adhere to all district policies and regulations.
  17. Perform all other responsibilities and duties assigned by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee.
