MASTER OF SOCIAL WORK (MSW) INTERN

Mission: Safe Passages disrupts the cycle of poverty by engaging youth and families to build and drive a continuum of services that supports student success and community development.

Safe Passages is a non-profit organization committed to disrupting the cycle of poverty by supporting our local community. We serve over 5,000 children and families annually through our strategies that span across the life spectrum of birth through young adulthood, including Early Childhood, School Linked Services, Juvenile Justice, and Career Pathways. Safe Passages’ work is based on the premises that access to educational opportunity, health services, and family support should not be dictated by race or socio-economic status, and that healthy and supported youth are better prepared to learn and succeed.

Position Summary: 
Under the instruction of a Master of Social Worker (MSW) and/or the Clinical Director (LCSW, PPSC) the MSW Intern will learn to engage children and families most impacted by poverty, structural racism, and systemic inequities. MSW Interns will learn to serve clients as a trusted partner and client-centered advocate to improve their socio-emotional, developmental, and academic functioning. Interns will learn to utilize a culturally affirmative family centered approach with an emphasis on family and community strengths and resiliency. The MSW Intern will develop a stellar understanding of immigration, public benefits, biopsychosocial assessment, risk assessments, and restorative practice. 

The following skills and practice learning opportunities are available for Master of Social Work student interns:

  • Support children and families across agency programming at the micro, mezzo and macro level utilizing a strengths-based, culturally affirmative approach to services. 

  • Engage, partner, and collaborate with staff, partners, families, and communities. 

  • Conduct biopsychosocial assessment and intervention plans in partnership with clients and families of TK – 12th graders at Title 1 school-based partnerships.

  • Provide 1:1 counseling, family consultation, groups and psychoeducation to students and families of TK – 12th graders at school-based partnerships.

  • Provide case management services to children and families with a focus on securing public benefits, healthcare, food, and other basic needs.

  • Participate in multi-disciplinary team case conferencing, collaboration, and coordination in service to clients and families.

  • Develop a strong understanding of legal mandates.

  • Maintain client records and complete reports as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Current enrollment as a first or second year student in an accredited Master of Social Work program

Experience: 1-2 years working/volunteering in schools, non-profit, and/or government program working with families from diverse linguistic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds.

Preferred Abilities:  

  • Bilingual Spanish or Arabic

  • Ability to be fully present 

  • Ability to receive feedback and direction 

  • Strong interpersonal communication 

  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple partners

  • Ability to work with a diverse group of staff, partners, clients, and families

  • Strong time management skills and ability to prioritize internships assignments

Required Clearances:

  • Full COVID-19 vaccine 

  • Fingerprinted and satisfactory Department of Justice records check prior to start date

  • TB test and clearance within the last 3 years

Work Schedule: 8:30am – 5:00pm/schedule to be determined by MSW graduate program.

Compensation: Stipend $7k – 10K depending on hours in placement & language ability.
