Overview and Responsibilities

The WisTech Open Librarian supports the creation efforts of open educational resources (OER) across the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS). This role is the lead librarian for WTCS open educational resources efforts. Functions include training faculty and other stakeholders on the value of OER, curating resources, and reviewing copyright/licensing requirements for faculty-led creation projects. Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with OER project lead, lead editors, subject matter experts (SMEs), and faculty developers to successfully deliver WTCS OER funded creation projects.
  • Research existing OER or content in the public domain for faculty and SMEs.
  • Meet with SMEs and faculty developers regularly to understand resource and content needs, virtually and in-person.
  • Collaborate with instructional designer/technologist to ensure content is accessible and meets universal design for learning (UDL) guidelines.
  • Transpose originally created content into Pressbooks, ensuring usability and accessibility.
  • Ensure that copyright and fair use standards are respected according to federal regulations.
  • Assign appropriate Creative Commons licenses to finished projects.
  • Share published content in the institutional repository, WISELearn, WTCS OER index, and Pressbooks directory.
  • May provide OER training to WTCS stakeholders, virtually and in-person.
  • Initiate, plan, and develop tutorials and supporting instructional materials for specific library resources and OER.
  • Assist in the planning of the annual Wisconsin Open Education Symposium.
  • Participate in regional, state, and national OER and library organizations and professional development as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to think critically by applying problem solving practices, acquiring relevant information, using technology and other resources appropriately, and evaluating alternatives.
  • Ability to communicate effectively by speaking and writing clearly, concisely, and professionally; practicing active listening; reading critically and adapting communication for audience.
  • Ability to value diversity by recognizing personal biases, adapting to culturally diverse situations, and demonstrating a commitment to equity, inclusion, and respectful interactions with persons of diverse ethnic, cultural, social-economic, or educational backgrounds.

Advanced knowledge of and skills with technology including software programs for communication, data collection, and decision making including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program. 
  • Experience working at an academic (higher education) library or bookstore setting preferred.
