Department: Administration

FLSA Status: Full Time Hourly/Non-Exempt

Schedule: 40 Hours per Week/Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm (Includes 30-minute unpaid meal break).

WHO WE ARE:

Food Bank of Central New York is a not-for-profit organization leading the effort to eliminate hunger in our region, by partnership with others in our community, through education, advocacy, and distribution of nutritious food. We partner with 360 community partners in the counties of Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, and St. Lawrence.

The core of our work is achieved by partnering with local agencies that distribute food to individuals and families in need. The key partners that make up our emergency food network are food pantries, soup kitchens, and emergency shelters. Other not-for-profit agencies such as day care centers, rehabilitation centers, senior centers, and group homes are able to utilize membership as a way to supplement their agency food needs.

Our Vision is to see a community where everyone has access to nutritious food and no one is hungry.

Hunger is a very serious problem in the United States today. Despite its great wealth, an estimated one in eight Americans rely on emergency food assistance. Among the thousands of people who depend on charitable food programs in central and northern New York, and the Mohawk Valley:

  • 29% are children 18 or younger
  • 10% are without health insurance
  • 68% have been unemployed for more than two years
  • 32% have a working family member
  • 91% are below the federal poverty line
  • 41% earn less than $12,000 annually 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Facilities Associate is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and operational functionality of the premises, which includes an office, food warehouse space, and outdoor space. This position plays a crucial role in ensuring that the environment is sanitary, safe, and welcoming for staff, volunteers, and visitors. The associate will also handle specialized cleaning and maintenance tasks in various temperature-controlled environments, including cold storage areas.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform general indoor cleaning and maintenance tasks including but not limited to sweeping, mopping, dusting, and trash removal.
  • Perform general outdoor groundskeeping including but not limited to mowing, plowing, and general outdoor maintenance.
  • Ensure all areas are sanitized according to the health and safety standards of a food storage facility.
  • Operate and maintain cleaning equipment and tools, including floor buffers, vacuums, and other machinery.
  • Address immediate safety hazards to prevent injuries.
  • Manage inventory of cleaning supplies, placing orders as necessary under the supervision of your supervisor.
  • Respond to urgent cleanliness or maintenance issues as they arise.
  • Work in freezer and cold environment conditions for short increments to perform specific cleaning duties.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Comfortable working in varying temperature conditions, including freezer/cold environments for short periods.
  • Ability to bend, stretch, twist, and reach with your body, arms, and/or legs.
  • Capable of using ladders and step stools to access hard-to-reach areas.

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal background check. Food Bank of Central New York complies with all applicable state and federal laws pertaining to drug testing and criminal background checks, including Article 23-A.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Previous experience in janitorial or cleaning services preferred.
  • Experience working in environments with varying temperatures, including cold storage, is a plus.

SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and supplies.
  • Familiarity with Material Safety Data Sheets.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
