Position Summary
Michigan State University (MSU) operates the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. Hosting what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, FRIB enables scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry. User facility operation is supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics as one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities. MSU's nuclear physics graduate program is a top-ranked program nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report.
This position affords an exciting opportunity to become part of the world-class FRIB Laboratory that enables unique discovery opportunities in nuclear science.
Purpose:
The Inspection Engineer will perform intricate measurements for quality assurance on FRIB components with a high degree of precision and regard for data integrity by inspecting fabrications, assemblies, and other components for the accelerator. Additionally, provide support for survey and alignment activities: performing measurements on magnets and diagnostic components to characterize the location of their alignment features, working within an alignment team performing component alignment activities and location verification of installed components, and infrastructure as-built surveys.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Perform precision dimensional inspection and fiducialization of critical components for the Alignment Group.
  • Employ PC-DMIS accurately with portable and table CMMs and Spatial Analyzer with laser trackers.
  • Properly use calipers, height gages, micrometers, and other standard measurement equipment.
    • Accurately record and deliver measurement data gathered with these instruments.
    • Maintain metrology and survey equipment and tools.
  • Survey laboratory spaces and components using a variety of instrumentation (laser scanner, laser tracker, and optical tooling) for mechanical inspection.
  • Develop complex PC-DMIS CMM programs, offline and online, with or without CAD models.
  • Carry out complicated and sometimes tedious measurement procedures to meet and maintain project design tolerances.
  • Record and document inspection data.
  • Follow division/department policies and procedures.
  • Complete work and training in new systems as required and understand project alignment parameters.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification.

  • Knowledge of three-dimensional coordinate systems and associated operations and analyses
  • Experience with clearly and accurately recording and reporting data, procedures, and task-based job particulars.
  • General knowledge of surveying technology and techniques
  • Skill and ability to complete accelerator component alignment.
  • Ability to analyze data.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and deliver high-quality support under time deadlines.

  • Mechanical Engineering Degree
  • Three to five years of experience with precision dimensional inspection of critical components, fiducialization of components for alignment, measurement, and alignment operations using CMM arms, laser trackers, and traditional optical tooling instruments.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous experience with alignment and fiducialization of equipment for particle beam facilities.
  • Software experience with PC-DMIS and New River Kinematics' Spatial Analyzer software.
